The PRAXIS exam is required to obtain a teaching license in the state of Nevada. This

exam focuses on three main subjects: Math, Reading, and Writing. I am currently finishing my

Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education at the College of Southern Nevada, and this exam is

required for me to graduate with my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada Las

Vegas. I intend to transfer to the University of Nevada Las Vegas once I complete my

Associate’s Degree at the College of Southern Nevada. I will have to take this exam in the

following couple of years before I graduate with my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. I took

the PRAXIS practice tests to see where I am and if I need to make any improvements. The scores

required to pass this exam are 156 for Reading, 162 for Writing, and 150 for Math.

For this test, I read some links that my Education Professor assigned, I also read through

the test practice questions and answers and I read the instructions for the test. I did not, however,

prepare myself like I would have liked to, for example, I would have spent more time studying

and going over old material that I probably forgot since it has been about 7 years that I have not

attended school. Because of this, my studying should have been a lot more than what I did, and

therefore my scores reflect the work that I still need to do.

After taking all three tests, reading, writing, and math, my results were the following: In

reading 57% “Needs Significant Improvement”, in Math 69% “Needs Improvement”, and in

Writing 78% “Borderline”. I obtained my lowest score in Reading, which I was not surprised at

all, because my reading skills are not where I want them to be. Even though I read the study

guides, I still did not feel confident enough, which was reflected in my score. The writing

section, however, was a little easier because I have always been strong in that subject, which was

reflected in my score. However, I do believe that I could have done better than just “Borderline”,

so it means I must study a little more for that. My math results surprised me because throughout

the exam I was feeling very confident in my answers, so the score I obtained was not what I had

in mind.

Based on these results, I concluded that I need to study more. In the future, I will use

more resources, like going to a study center at school or taking more practice tests. As a full-time

mother of two kids, it is hard to get things done, but this showed me that I need to make more

time available to study quietly if I want to better my scores once I take the real PRAXIS. I will

also look for study groups, which I believe would help me because I learn better in person rather

than just sitting down and reading on my computer. By doing all these things, I hope I will be

ready to score better on my next try.
