(Text 1)
M: Now if you have any questions about the project, I’d be happy to answer them.
W: Nothing comes to mind right now, but I’d like to go over all the material about the project one
more time.
(Text 2)
M: We are out of paper for the printer.
W: I ordered some online yesterday and it will be here by noon.
M: In this case, I’ll answer the e-mails first and print the document this afternoon.
(Text 3)
W: I can’t decide how to go to the party tomorrow. I don’t want to take a bus or the subway.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll be glad to give you a ride if you want to go.

2
W: That would be great! Thank you so much.
(Text 4)
W: My washing machine is more than ten years old and it has worked just fine until last night.
Can you fix it?
M: Sorry, but it’s impossible for me to get parts for it now. I’m afraid you’ll need to get a new one.
(Text 5)
M: I can’t believe it’s already Thursday. What do you plan to do this weekend?
W: I’m going to go on a hike with my friends this Saturday, and I’ll go to the cinema this Sunday.
A new film is coming out that day.
(Text 6)
W: Do you work for seven hours every day, Henry?
M: No. I work four hours longer than that.
W: Do you mean you have to work in the evening?
M: Yes, and I work at the weekend, too, but I can usually get one day off work every week.
W: Do you love your job?
M: Yes. Many people come to eat at the café. I can meet many different people every day. It is
very helpful to my writing.
W: Do you mean you’re writing a book?
M: Yes. I work there just because I need money to support my writing.
(Text 7)
W: Do you still remember the day when you experienced the earthquake, Sam?
M: Yes, I remember that day very well. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.
W: What were you doing when the earthquake happened?
M: I was just starting to take off my clothes because I wanted to take a shower. When I realized an
earthquake was happening, I quickly put my clothes back on.
W: What did you do next?
M: I knew there was no way that I could run outside because I lived on the eighth floor, so I hid
under a hard table.
W: Was anyone else with you when the earthquake happened?
M: Yes. My little sister and her babysitter were also in the apartment. The babysitter had come a
little early that day. We were all terrified. We all hid under the table together and prayed it
wouldn’t be a bad earthquake.
W: How long did you hide under the table?
M: For several minutes, but it seemed like hours.
(Text 8)
M: Daron, when did you fall in love with creating cartoons?
W: When I was in the fourth grade. My first attempt was a pink cat named Uh-oh.
M: What are you working on now?
W: Now I’m making magic on my cartoon Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
M: Could you tell me something about it?
W: Sure. The cartoon follows the fearless Star Butterfly. She is a princess from another planet. To
protect her from an evil man, Star’s parents send her to live with the Diaz family on Earth.
M: Does she know how to act on Earth?
W: No. She behaves really strangely, but she has a good heart and will do anything to protect

Diaz’s son, Marco.
M: When will the cartoon be aired?
W: I’m not sure, but when a preview of the cartoon aired at San Diego Comi-Con 2014, a Disney
representative told me that it will definitely attract a large audience.
M: Congratulations. I really cannot wait to watch it on TV.
W: Thanks.
(Text 9)
M: Look at all this food you bought today. It seems you really like eating junk food.
W: Actually I don’t like eating junk food, but I don’t have many other choices. You know, my
community is a food desert.
M: Food desert? What does that mean?
W: A food desert is a place where fresh, healthy food is expensive and hard to find. It’s especially
common in low-income communities, like where I live. You know, 38% of the population here
lives at the poverty level.
M: I’m sorry to hear that, but I’ve some good news for you. I just heard on the radio that there will
be a 2% tax on junk food.
W: That’s good news? Now I’ll have to pay even more for food.
M: Let me finish. The law will also remove the 5% sales tax on healthy foods, like fresh fruit and
vegetables.
W: Ah, now that’s really great news. Now I can buy more healthy foods.
M: Yes.
W: So do you like eating junk food?
M: No. I hardly ever eat junk food. Eating junk food can lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
W: That’s really horrible.
M: Hey, it’s already 12 o’clock. Would you like me to take you to a new restaurant near our
office? It has really good seafood.
W: Great! Then I’d like to invite you to dinner in my home tonight.
(Text 10)
Grandma Moses’ real name is Anna Mary Robertson Moses. She did needlework for many
years. But at the age of seventy-six, she found it very difficult to do needlework because she could
no longer hold a needle. So she decided to try something else. She decided that painting was what
she should do for the rest of her life. Though she hadn’t painted before, she painted well because
of the needlework she had done. She became well-known as a painter just two years after she
started painting.
At that time, Grandma Moses’ family lived a very poor life because of the bad economy. She
really needed to make money selling her paintings. Luckily, her paintings were discovered by a
collector at the Women’s Exchange. Thanks to that collector, she made some money, and then in
1939, she had three pieces shown in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A year later she had
her first solo exhibit at the Gallerie St. Etienne in New York.
