What is Environment?

Environment is derived from French word Environ which means surrounding


or enveloping. The term environment can be defined as a total of all biotic and
abiotic components and how they affect and interact with each other. Biotic
elements are composed of all living things such as animals, plants, fisheries,
and birds,etc. Non-living things such as water, land, sunlight, rock, and
air, etc comprises the abiotic elements. It is synonymous of habitat,
territory, domain, home, abode, surroundings, conditions, environs and/or
circumstances. All the factors such as physical, geographical, chemical,
biological and ecological which affects human life and its existence on this
planet are called environment. We can also define environment as the
combination of all physical and organic factors that act on a living being,
residents or ecological society which powers its endurance and growth.
Everything that surrounds or affects an organism during its lifetime is
collectively known as its environment. The relationship between organism and
environment is complex as it comprises both biotic and abiotic components. It
is non static and tents to change continuously.
