Project Title: Optimal energy storage management for domestic homes with battery
energy storage system and electric vehicle load.

Programme Suitability: BEng Electrical Power

Supervisor: Prof. Chengke Zhou (c.zhou@gcu.ac.uk)

Brief Description of Project (300 words max):

Background:

Research topic:

Power distribution network is undergoing significant changes. On one hand, in tandem with
economic development, electricity consumption will rapidly increase in the future due to
expected, large scale electric vehicle (EV) adoption [1].. Battery Energy Storage System
(BESS) can be utilized as a solution to optimize the management of energy [2].. The growth
of power consumption will result in a lack of power capacity in distribution network. On the
other hand, technological advancement in distribution networks, including the use of smart
meter in particular, offers the flexibility to keep a track record of the energy consumption of
the end users[3].. Since BESS is supposed to be able to handle bidirectional power flow in an
order of milliseconds, the dispatch and effective control of the BESS will be able to play a
key role in economical and efficient management of domestic energy system [4]. . This
project will aim to develop a comprehensive solution of control and operation strategy to
optimize future domestic energy system using BESS.

The work will involve developing a load demand model with a domestic EV charger and a
method for optimising the size of a BESS. Case studies will be expected in selected homes.

Project Skills Development/Background Requirements: The project requires the candidate

to have a background in electrical power engineering. It develops analytical skills in
modelling of load demand and consumer behaviour, and programming skills using Matlab
and Homer.
