Activity 1: Blood: Blood Typing

If you cannot just save your completion results as a pdf, include a screen shot of
your table of collected lab data and table of blood type compatibility answers in the
space below.

Follow up questions:
1.) In your own words, explain why someone who is AB+ is the universal
receiver of blood and O- is the universal donor of blood.
O- is the universal donor of blood because those cells don’t have any A, B,
or Rh don’t have any antigens. AB+ blood don’t have the antibodies to A, B,
or Rh.

2.) Women who are Rh-negative but carry their first child that is Rh-positive
will produce antibodies for the Rh factor when the blood mixes during
delivery, which is referred to as Rh sensitization. This process generally
does not harm that first child, but will be harmful to any additional offspring
that are also Rh-positive the woman might have in the future.

Based on what is discussed with antibody production in the background

information, explain in your own words why the first child is not harmed,
but future Rh-positive children are harmed by this Rh-sensitization.
The antibodies won’t be made in time to attack the first child, but will
be ready for the second one and attack their cells.

3.) Scenario 1: A woman who has AB blood has a child with a man who is has
the following alleles: IA i

a. List all possible blood types their offspring could have in the space
below.
IaIa, IaIb, Iai, Ibi

b. What is the probability that they would have a child who is type AB
blood?

25%

4.) Scenario 2: A woman who has type O blood has a child with a man who is
has the following alleles: IB i

a. List all possible blood types their offspring could have in the space
below.
Ibi, Ibi, ii, ii

b. What is the probability that they would have a child who is type B
blood?

50%
