How to make your own Starecta (Gelb splint)

Not so long ago, we figured out how to independently make a splint for biomechanical
treatment using Spaniard Marsello method from the simplest custom-made mouth-
guard and polymorph. But “progress does not stand still,” and our Russian inventors do
not sleep So, thanks to our reader Zhanar and the “pioneers” in this matter, the girls

We’ll start with the simplest thing – a basic splint mouthguard. But first, one important
thing. In the comments to the article on making a splint for biomechanical treatment,
Irina told us that the American polymorph from Amazon does not stick to teeth, unlike
the Chinese polymorph from AliExpress. Why this information is useful to us – it means
that when making mouthguards, polymorph from Amazon can be directly applied to
the teeth and you can not be afraid of fixing it there. At the same time, a life hack from
the same Irina for those who have already stocked up with a polymorph from AliEx-
press – in this case, apply a plastic wrap to the teeth before making the mouthguard.

And the good news is that the polymorph used by Marcelo is back on eBay. But how he
behaves in direct contact with the teeth, we do not yet have data (therefore, if you have
such an experience, please write down in the comments, this will greatly help others to
orient themselves). Marcello used this polymorph to make homemade occlusion height
restorations after treatment, and I only know that they did not pop out during the day
when talking (at night he continues to put on the splint with the polymorph applied to it).

If suddenly you have a situation that the acquired polymorph has stuck to your teeth,
don’t worry – the situation is fixable. Calmly, with hot water of a tolerable temperature,
then rinse out the polymorph in the mouth up to 20-30 times. It softens and can be re-
moved from the teeth without problems. And before we move on directly to the process
of making a mouthguard from polymorph, we will also discuss its cost.

Is it worth it? Let’s compare. To order a regular retention mouthguard from an ortho-
dontist costs about 20-30 US dollars (in Russia). At the same time, this is not an ideal op-
tion, since such a mouthguard is still soft (our girls share their impressions that the pres-
sure of the polymorph layer on the teeth is felt, and it is also difficult to eat with such a
mouthguard – a more hard material is needed there). Also, in many cases, the outer edge
of the mouthguard from the side of the front teeth needs to be cut off, and we already
have two cases when a person cut too much, and after a while the mouthguard just
burst. It’s a shame for 20-30 $. In the case of making your own mouthguard from poly-
morph, you pay only for it, and even in the most expensive “American” version it is $10

In addition, sometimes there are difficulties

Okwith ordering a retention kappa from an
orthodontist, because doctors are interested in why you need it, and sometimes they

refuse. In the case of self-made mouthguards, your hands are completely untied. And
you also have a decent amount of polymorph at your disposal, which is enough for the
base of the mouthguard itself, and for increasing the height on it. The benefits for us
are obvious, and therefore we will proceed to the most important “sacrament”.

How to make a kappa out of polymorph

Our reader Zhanar shared with us how to “alchemize” correctly in this field by sending
a detailed video instruction from a resourceful American guy, which you see above.
True, the guy made himself there for some reason a mouthguard for the upper jaw, but
the whole process of making a mouthguard for the lower jaw to the limit will be under-
standable even to those who do not know English (especially since the guy does it infor-
matively, but very funny ). For clarity, here are just a few screenshots of the video. So,
fill the polymorph with hot water (about 60 degrees, maybe a little more):

We wait until it softens (the polymorph should become transparent) and take it out with
a spoon onto a prepared clean surface:

We spread it over the surface with our fingers:

Then we roll out the polymorph in a glass like dough:

By this time, it has already hardened a little with us, so again we carefully put this
rolled layer in a glass of hot water, and again we roll it out to a very thin state:

The guy in the video cut the rolled polymorphic “dough” into two parts, since he was
making two mouth guards – for the upper and lower jaw, but we will not do this, be-
cause we only need one, and therefore we will immediately cut it in the form of a
slightly elongated semicircle (this is shown more clearly in the video):

We “put on” it on the lower row of our teeth, make the initial “blank”, cut off the excess
edges, again put this “shape” in hot water for a short time to soften it slightly, put it
back on the teeth and wait until it hardens:

This is an important point for us to wait until the material hardens completely, because,
according to Irina, the polymorph from the American Amazon does not stick to the
teeth, but also has a slight expansion when hardened. If you remove it earlier, then
later it may start to press on your teeth. Therefore, it should be held in the mouth until
it cools completely – the less it will press on afterwards. So, our kappa is ready. The guy
from the video took several attempts to make the “perfect” version, but he did it (as
they say, skill comes with experience):

Irina also wrote a clarification on how to remove the outer edge of the mouthguard in
front of the front teeth – this can be done with a mini-drill! Someone will already have
enough of this mouthguard, but this is the base, with an understanding of the manufac-
turing process of which we will move on if you want a more complicated, more conve-
nient option.

In the photo above, you can see one of the first old-style Rectifier Starecta splints in de-
velopment. “Why not make the same base from polymorph”, thought our girl from our
chat Catherine, and as a result she made her “home” masterpiece (on the top of it there
is an additional polymorph for activation, as in the photo above):

How she did it. Catherine’s “ingredients” of this “cake”  are of “Amazonian” polymorph.
She threw it straight into boiling water, making the base very thin, that somewhere
there were even holes in it. The main purpose of this was to make a link. When Cather-
ine did it, she cut off the excess. Further, a base is made on it from the sides, like a
mouth guard, which is fixed in the mouth, as in the video that we watched above. Like-
wise, this base is given time to harden. Then, from above, Catherine added a few mil-
limeters on each side and again let the layers solidify. And the last one she has already
applied is the layer on which she made the prints of the teeth. You can take a closer
look at the result of these painstaking works here (straight “air meringue”, which you
just want to call “ballerina Anna Pavlova” ):

And here is such a comment about her know-how in comparison with the original de-
sign of the new Plug-and-Play splint left by Catherine:

“Finally,  the polymorph arrived to me. God, guys, this is just heaven and earth: an eerie
construction of Starecta and a self-made kappa from polymorph. You can swallow, yawn,
you can not scratch your tongue, you can increase or decrease the height! This is lovely!
In general, I am thoroughly against Starecta and for homemade pads)

In principle, this is what Marcello was talking about – the new Starecta design immedi-
ately seemed to him “bulky” and inconvenient, and he advocated exclusively for the
old Rectifier design, in which is much more comfortable to do meeting, and which is
much more suitable for social life. And you can do it, as we have seen, completely on
your own, if there would be a polymorph, head and hands!

Guy, sorry, but I am a complete noob in anything DIY. So, the only material/ingredient I
need to have an Starecta-like device is something like InstaMorph from Amazon? I am
planning on buying a lot of InstaMorph from Amazon.

Thank you for your answers. I have the plug and play, but I want to build it from
scratch. I have the Instamorph already with me. I don’t understand well why the
minidrill can be useful. Can you explain?
