Week 1 Session 1

Outline

• Academic Honesty and Integrity

• Ethical Principles and Plagiarism

• Understanding Purpose of Research

Objectives

By the end of this session students should be able to

• Have an awareness of research ethics

Ethics

A system of moral principles

A set of rules,
written and unwritten,
Ethics that control our expectations of our behaviors
and others’ behaviors

A moral philosophy concerned with what is

good for individuals Can you give some examples
for these in society?

A moral map

Ethics in Research

According to Resnik (2011)

Research ethics or norms promote → “knowledge, truth, and avoidance of error” (p. 1)

Research ethics protects against → “fabricating, falsifying, or misrepresenting research data” (p. 1).

Honesty and Integrity

o Report research findings honestly

o Present the data fairly
o Discuss frankly
o Act sincerely
Objectivity

Ethics consists in judgments about moral constraints, which govern a person's treatment of other people

Being objective means:

o Avoiding bias in any aspect of research; this includes interpretation, peer review, etc…
o Having the need to disclose any personal bias that may affect our research
o In research and academia, subjectivity and any kind of personal judgements should be avoided

→ Personal opinions should be avoided

→ Instead, variety of perspectives should be considered and included
Openness

Always
o Be prepared to share views, suggestions, results that are developed, when submitting findings,
→ This helps to further knowledge in the field and advance science
o When sharing your views, also be open to new ideas and/or criticism
o Take time reviewing your work to increase credibility and trustworthiness
Plagiarism

Taking someone else’s ideas, words, findings, images, etc. without acknowledging the person who created them

o It is an ethical and legal obligation to acknowledge Any time you use someone
someone else’s ideas or words you have used else’s work without giving
them credit, you are
o Academic writing encourages paraphrasing plagiarizing
information you have researched and read
APA Style

The best method of avoiding plagiarism is to

o cite the ideas, theories, and research that directly influenced your work the moment you
start working on the paper,

o cite key background information, and any/all information that may

support or dispute your theory or hypothesis, or offer critical definitions or data (p. 169)
APA Style

The American Psychological Association provides a manual for

writers to follow
o Standards for scientific communication
o Specific procedures and style rules in writing a paper including
• Structure and content (Layout and elements)
• Crediting sources (In-text citations and referencing)
• Mechanics of language (Sentence level concerns)
Artunian (2017) states ”Keep a record of where you found
each piece of information that you expect to include in your history.”

reducing the spread of the virus.
Turn-it-in

Turn-it-in is a text matching software

It compares your written work to an online database to

check whether your submission is your original work

After the analysis, it provides a Similarity/Originality Report

Collusion

Collusion is a type of plagiarism

It is a secretive, usually illegal, agreement between 2 or more people with the intent to commit
fraud or deceit

Collusion in Academia
Students must submit their own work regardless of group work
Students can discuss ideas with other but must not lend their work to others before submission
Respect

Respect to and for Intellectual Property

o You should never plagiarize, or copy other people’s work
and try to pass it off as your own
Legality

Always
o be aware of laws and regulations that govern your work, personal
life, and professional life
o make sure that you conform to these
How to Avoid Plagiarism

A researcher goes through many steps, as we will see in the following weeks

Authors, artists, content creators, directors, writers, actors, students,

and many more researchers and creators
put tremendous effort and knowledge into the work they produce

Doesn’t everyone deserve appreciation for all

the hard work they put in?
How to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a significant violation of truthfulness and involves

stealing intellectual property or taking credit for other
individuals’ work (Berg, 1990; Berk, 1991; King et al., 1997;
Malone, 1998; Rogers, 1993).
How to Avoid Plagiarism

Create your own detailed note-taking system

The moment you start research, keep a record of your sources → Bibliography

Verify the information included in your summaries, paraphrases, and quotations from other sources

In your writing, clearly indicate the ideas, words, etc. taken from other sources by using signal phrases

Use in-text citations to indicate necessary the source information so it can be found in the References
Ethics Statement

o Ensure the quality of your paper;

o Seek objectivity, honesty, and integrity;
o Respect confidentiality;
o Avoid harm to your readers, institution, and colleagues;
o Avoid plagiarism;
o Show that your paper is independent and impartial
