1. What are the education path and qualifications necessary for a career in the
education/training field in which you are interested?
For this degree you need a minimum Bachelor of Science in Family Consumer Sciences with an
emphasis of Education. (College of Health and human Sciences School of Education)

2. Please list a sample job description for your ideal education/training career.
“Family and consumer sciences teachers (also called home economics teachers) teach subjects
such as nutrition, budgeting, cooking, family living, sewing, child care, fashion design and many
others. They work in school settings and have regular classes of 60 to 75 minutes each.” (High

3. What skills are needed for this career?
You need a variety of skills in areas like culinary arts, sewing and textiles, child development,
and interior design.
4. What is the current and future job outlook for this career?
“As of May 2012, about 614,000 people taught middle school, and over 955,000 instructors
taught high school, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.bls.gov).
Employment was expected to increase by six percent for high school teachers and 12% for
middle school teachers between 2012 and 2022. At the postsecondary level, there were 4,700
people who taught home economics, and the BLS projected that postsecondary teaching
positions would increase by 19% between 2012 and 2022.” (Family and Consumer Sciences

5. Mentorship is a big component in education/training job sustainability. Who could be a mentor
to you and what other measures could you take to ensure a long, enjoyable, and successful
career? When it come to the part of student teaching your mentor will be the teacher that you are
their student teacher. Along the way you will learn their techniques and use them to create your
own. My mentor could possibly be the Rigby Middle School teacher, or any of the Rigby High
School Teachers. Measures that I could take now is to learn all I can about preparing effective
lesson plans.
6. What are the entry-level positions and opportunities for professional advancements in this
career field?
There really isn’t any entry -level positions but career opportunities that you could have from
having this degree is: Public School Secondary Teacher, Secondary FCS-Education Teacher,
Home Economist, Home Management Advisor, Private School Elementary Teacher, Garment
Construction, Adoption Agency, Consultant (Child and Family Studies)
