W5: EVALUATE ACTIVITY ON ANTHROPOLOGICAL

CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE SELF
C. Critical Questions for Discussion

1. Think of at least three cases of college fraternity hazing in the Philippines within the
last five years. What do you think of organizations requiring their neophytes to perform
various demeaning acts and undergo life threatening initiation rites before incorporating
them into the fraternity as full-fledged brothers? Would you consider joining a
fraternity/sorority in your campus? What could be the reasons why college students are
encouraged to join fraternities/sororities? Focus your discussion using Golubovic's theory
on identity crisis.
- For me, the cases of college fraternity hazing within the past five years, still exists
actively today, and I believe this is also one of the major problems that our country refused
to faced or they only give little focus on it. What’s worst is the fact that most of these cases
still doesn’t attain proper justice, just like: like the hazing cases of Marc Andrei Marcos, a
first-year law student in San Beda who died in the hands of his fraternity brothers, Horacio
Castillo III, under Aegis Juris fraternity, died after undergoing hazing. The Manila Police
District medico-legal doctor said Castillo had a massive heart attack possibly due to the
injuries he suffered. And we also have Darwin Dormitorio, A 20-year-old cadet Darwin
Dormitorio was brought to the hospital after complaining of stomach pain. He succumbed
from the internal bleeding in the stomach cause by blunt force trauma. Few days later, it
was confirmed by the police that Dormitorio was a victim of hazing.

Neophytes in organizations, needs to undergo service immersion that involves

humiliation, psychological torture, or physical violence, because if they really want to join
the fraternity, then loyalty and secrecy is a must. I could never ever imagine myself being
in that kind of institution, they are all no one to me, then why would I even bother to prove
myself to them? Wherein I could actually live a life the way I wanted it to be. Reasons why
students are encouraged to join a fraternity could be: Making Connections, learn new skills
and create lifelong friendships. But most of the time, students entered Fraternity because
of peer pressure, like wanting to fit-in, there is an identity crisis that is going on or there
will be uncertainty and confusion in which a person's sense of identity becomes insecure,
typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in society.

2. Identify Filipino anthropologists and describe their contributions towards the Filipino
conceptualization of the self.
- Felipe Landa Jocano, was a Filipino anthropologist, educator, and author known
for his significant body of work within the field of Philippine Anthropology, he defines the
self of man as natural, biological, communal, social, normative, ethical, moral, aesthetic,
teleological, and ideological. Another is, Dionisio Miranda, Miranda’s substantive
findings on “loob” as a complex psycho-moral reality is that it is composed of the concepts
of “sarili” (man as self), psychological personality and moral character as two dimensions
of sarili, categories of loob, distinctive constituents of katauhan, and distinctive
constituents of pagkatao.
3. Do you know someone in your family, neighborhood, or school who has identity
struggles? What is the basis of your judgment? Do you think that individuals must be
able to defend their identities if they are threatened? Group yourselves into five and
discuss your answers. Write your group's conclusions on how individuals must act when
facing identity struggles.
-I know a friend, who is very cheerful, talkative, easy-going and fun to be with, if
she’s at school or with us (her friends). And then one time, her parents invites us to their
house for some sort of occasion, there we noticed, what she is at school is totally different
when she’s at home, so on the next day, she shares everything to us, how she struggles with
her identity, and questions.. how can she truly be herself, if her parents always pushes her
to be her complete opposite? such as letting her do what she doesn’t like. One thing we do
as her friends, we heartedly give an advice to her, that if not today, We hope someday, you
could finally be out of the cage or trap and spread your wings because you deserve so much
in this world because you’re a good person and that’s what truly matters, and you don’t
have to be afraid to be true to yourself, just prove to everyone that there’s nothing wrong
with it, and I strongly believe you can achieve more of those great things, when it is done
your way.
