#2933 Word Family Stories for Reading Comprehension 2 ©Teacher Created Resources, Inc.
Introduction
Word Family Stories for Reading Comprehension allows students to practice reading and answering
questions in order to fully comprehend what is read. The exercises in this book can be done
sequentially or can be taken out of order, as needed. On the student pages, there are pictures to help
students visualize the stories. These can be colored after the activity pages are completed. There are
also words that are underlined. The underlined words are words in the same word families. Encourage
students to use these lines as clues to help them read the words.

After reading the story, the questions can be answered either by circling the answers or by reproducing
and using the fill-in answer sheets found on pages 46 and 47. An answer key can be found on page 48.
The following standards or objectives will be met or reinforced by completing the practice pages
included in this book. These standards and objectives are similar to the ones required by your state and
school district for kindergarten and first grade.

Standards
Standard 5: Uses the general skills and strategies of the reading process
• Uses mental images based on pictures and print to aid in comprehension of text
• Uses meaning clues (e.g., picture captions, title, cover, headings, story structure, story
topic) to aid comprehension and make predictions about content (e.g., action, events,
character’s behavior)
• Uses basic elements of phonetic analysis (e.g., common letter/sound relationships,
beginning and ending consonants, vowel sounds, blends, word patterns) to decode
unknown words
• Understands level-appropriate sight words and vocabulary (e.g., words for persons,
places, things, actions; high frequency words such as said, was, and where)

Standard 6: Uses reading skills and strategies to understand and interpret a variety of literary texts
• Knows setting, main characters, main events, sequence, and problems in stories
• Knows the main ideas of theme of a story

Instant Words
On the next page are Dr. Fry’s Instant Words. Many of the words are used in this book. Dr. Fry’s
Instant Words are the most often used words in reading and writing. Teach only a few words at a time
to keep the success rate high. Use these words for flash cards, games, or just read down the column.
These high frequency words are also called “sight words” because they must be recognized instantly,
on sight, for reading fluency. Continued practice with the words will help your student to become more
successful at reading the stories.
