Pinggang Proporsyon (Plate Proportions)

Our group was assigned to have a sensory project based on the topic given to us which
was the sense of Taste. The sensory project was basically eat at any place in UP that offers food,
twice, on separate occasions. While eating we were also tasked to list down our observation
about the place and check the environment. Jot down notes that affects the sensory organs
during the whole experience.
Two weeks before the deadline, the group have decided on putting dibs (or in short, put
spoken ownership on a certain place, object, etc.) on each of the food places in UP. By far we
are collecting data from Chocolate Kiss at The Bahay ng Alumni, the Canteens of Bio, MBB, CS
Lib and CHK, and also the kiosks of Iskomai from Area 2 and Pavilion 1 of Palma Hall. We have a
wide variation of restaurants, kiosks and canteens. I was the one who dibbed at the CHK Mats
Canteen or “Mats” as we CHK students call it. Besides the comfort and easy location for me, the
establishment has been there after my every workouts and heavily active classes.
That aside, Mats for a canteen is kind of pricey for us student-athletes with the meals
costing an average of P75 while merienda averaging at P40. On the other hand, the
convenience it brings us and accessibility of food can be worth at times. The canteen can
accommodate atleast 40 people at a time. I haven’t really asked around about the starting
years of Mats, but as the facility shows, I think for the last 5-7 years they are operational. The
place has wobbly tables, paint fading walls and you would notice the kitchen’s burn marks on
the walls inside. I ordered my favorite Tapsilog costing P75 for both days of June 19 and 21.
When the meal is served, it is put on a special plate as seen from above, that has
dividers and acts as proportion setters for the meal. There are metal utensils readily available as
a self-service act though. Making it more environmentally-friendly than their plastic and one-
use counterparts. These are two of the objects that really enhanced my experience as to
dividing my food into healthy proportions.
For me, these two are the objects or forms of technology that enhances the way we
taste things or food in general. The plate gives the mind a psychological help to better the
proportions we intake. While the metal utensils are mere instruments that helps us digest,
break down and eat the food.
