Half a century ago, the amazing courage of Rosa Parks, the visionary leadership of Martin

Luther King, and the inspirational actions of the civil rights moments led politicians to write
equality into the law and make promises to all the citizens of the country. As it is rightly said by
Frances Wright that equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it. By
equality, we generally understand that all human beings are equal and should be entitled to the
identity of treatment and income. We believe that all men are created equal but this is not
true, no two men are similar in physical constitution, capacity, and temperament. Equality does
not mean the identity of treatment or sameness of reward. If a milkman gets the same reward
as a mathematician or a scientist, the purpose of society will be defeated. The sole purpose of
equality is that adequate opportunities are laid open to all.

India is the largest democracy in the world, there is a rule of the people, by the people, and for
the people. There are many important requirements for a country to be truly democratic and
the most important is Equality for its citizens. This means that everybody is equal in the eyes of
laws, without any discrimination on grounds of race, religion, gender, caste class, or birth. It is
very important to preserve the dignity of an individual. It is an essential and basic human right.
However, this ideal case does not exist. Even after 72 years of independence, many forms of
inequality exist in India. Yes, India still deals with Casteism, Religious Discrimination, Racism,
etc.

India is a diverse country with people belonging to different places, People have different
cultures, food, clothes and also look different but it doesn't mean they should be discriminated
against. Equality is a basic human right and every human being deserves fair treatment and
access to opportunities.

Gender quality is also a matter of concern. As per the World Economic Forum's gender gap
ranking, India stands at 108 out of 149 countries. It highlights the gap in opportunities in
women in comparison to men. In Indian society from a long time back, the social structure
towards women has been neglected in many areas like education, health, decision-making
areas, financial independence, etc. Another major reason which contributes to the
discriminatory behavior towards women in India is the dowry system in marriage. Because of
this son preference still prevails. Also, women are not entitled to equal job opportunities and
wages. Even in the 21st-century women are preferred in-home managing activities, many
women quit their jobs because of family commitments. However, such actions are very
uncommon among men.

Thus, to conclude, equality is an abstract concept with a magical touch that has inspired timid
millions to revolt in the past. Political philosophers and revolutionaries have used this concept
profusely to win over the hearts of the common man. Thus Democracy as a form of government
and a way of life can succeed only when there is equality in general and politics.
