The Contemporary World

What are the positive and negative impacts of globalization in the Philippines in regards
to?
A. Cultural Aspect
a. Positive Impact
Local Artists from the Philippines gained recognition from around the
World like Apl de Ap, Kenneth Cobunpue and many other. Globalization
has also paved way for our culture to be appreciated by the world through
international fair trade, cultural shows abroad and other international
activities.

b. Negative Impact
The usage of English language is one of the most apparent effects of
globalization on our culture. Although English is important for us to be
globally competitive, it has undervalued our native languages. And it has
become a pre-requisite to everyone who is seeking for a higher status in
society.

B. Sociological Aspect
a. Positive Impact
Tourism. Now many foreigners travel the country because of the
information they see or watched through the internet. Tourism helps on
the development of new markets and products and employment
opportunities for the locals.

b. Negative Impact
There are many people in the Philippines who are leaving their country to
look for work and start their own careers. This is another area of
globalization that is not given much thought. They all sacrifice being away
with their families just to provide for them.
C. Political Aspect
a. Positive Impact
Access to international aid and financial support. International
organizations are often committed to spread values like freedom and to
fight abuses within countries. Smaller countries like the Philippines and
other south east Asian countries can work together and gain more
influence internationally.

b. Negative Impact
The functioning of international and supranational organizations is often
not “democratic” in terms of representation and accountability. Like the
withdrawal of the Philippines in the International Criminal Court

criminal-court.html

D. Economical Aspect
a. Positive Impact
Trade Openness. The economy of the Philippines is the 36 th largest
economy and the thirteenth largest economy in Asia. According to
https://www.icontainers.com/us/2020/03/30/philippines-main-imports-and-
exports/ our country is mainly dependent on agriculture, service and
manufacturing for its GDP or Gross Domestic Product.

b. Negative Impact
Geo-political conflicts. The South China Sea or West Philippine Sea is a
disputed are in the region because of its importance in the global trade.
According to the website https://chinapower.csis.org/much-trade-transits-
south-china-sea/ 60 percent of the maritime trade passes through Asia,
with the said area carrying an estimated one-third of global shipping. The
tension between the countries surrounding the area may greatly affect the
overall economic situations of the said countries.
