1. List five (5) general characteristics of fungi. (5 marks)
- Much fungal growth cannot be seen either because it is microscopic or because it is out of sight.
- Fungi do not photosynthesize, but they must find food like animals do.
- Fungi belong to a kingdom of life all their own, distinct from animals. Plants and bacteria.
- Mushrooms and other macrofungi make up only part of the fungal community of the forest.
- Larger fungi have chitinous cell walls, and most have structures formed from hyphae.

- Most commonly is mushroom buttons such as
Agaricus.
- Fungi are good source of antibiotics as it is helpful in
killing disease causing microbes.

- For example antibiotic such as Penicilin is extracted
from fungi called Penicillium
- Fungi such as Erymothecium Ashbyii are used in the
synthesis of vitamin B-Riboflavin which helps in body
