Evaluation-Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task) what do you feel you have
learned in the progression from it to the full product?

This difference in quality is very obvious at first glance at these magazine front covers, My
preliminary task front cover , first of all in my prelim task cover The main photo is hovering above
the bottom of the page, and as I have learned this looks very unprofessional and makes the
magazine look like it has a lot of space that could be used up by adding cover lines and a spanning
cover line at the top of the page, I learned that with the addition of a few small cover lines you can
make the cover look a lot more active and get a feel of a more professional magazine.

The shot I used in my Prelim work is a not very good picture as it has been taken on a camera from a
phone; I learned that a good front cover requires a high quality shot to make the magazine look
believable. Also the picture doesn’t work because I am looking down in the picture and not up at the
camera, this loses a lot of contact with the reader, in my final magazine cover I have used an
interesting colour scheme that stays with the cover throughout, In my prelim task cover I have used
4 different colours that don’t really work together, I learned that the basis of a good front cover has
a strong three colour palette that doesn’t stray throughout the magazine.

Another element that I have learned from is spacing, In my prelim cover I have large gaps on it, this
makes the cover look very unprofessional it also makes it look like the cover is missing a lot of
content, I learned that by spacing out all of my cover lines and information on my cover I could
create a busier cover that looks more like a professional front cover instead of a third rate school
magazine.
In my contents page for my prelim task we can see that the spacing between each of the entries and
the pictures is very uneven, this gives the whole page a weird lopsided effect, I learned that I could
make my contents page look a lot more structured if I had all my images and picture s a certain
distance from each other constantly, the spacing that I gave to my Final contents page makes the
whole page have a better sense of structure, it allows the reader to have a easy time with reader it.

The pictures on my prelim task contents page are all different sizes this makes it look very
unprofessional and doesn’t allow me to fit the pictures together in a more structured layout because
they are all different sizes, I found by changing my images to all the same size I could line them up in
a more ordered layout, I could also then have larger photo’s as well so you could actually what is
happening in the photos’

Overall I found that I have improved a lot from my preliminary task, I found that with more use my
photo shopping skills improved and this allowed me though do more complex things to my work and
eventually make it better .
