Abstract:
The new documentary film The China Hustle begins amid the depths of the 2008
financial crisis, when we meet protagonist Dan David and a band of Wall Street
outsiders. These detective-like investors operate on the fringes of the financial
world, scouring global markets for money making opportunities. With the U.S.
economy and markets in a tailspin, they turn to China, where there is what seems
like a modern day gold rush. Chinese stock market indexes are doubling every
year and the potential seems endless. There’s one problem, though: U.S. investors
can’t participate because they are barred from investing directly in Chinese
markets. But this is America, and people always find a way. A few Wall Street
operators create a novel solution by bringing hundreds of promising Chinese
companies directly to U.S. stock markets. All of the sudden, US investors can get
in on the Chinese miracle, without leaving the comforting confines of the NYSE and
the NASDAQ.

It all seems to be going well, until detectives discover that most of the companies
they’re investing in are frauds, producing phony balance sheets, claiming sham
inventory levels and celebrating non-existent profits. The investors flip their
strategy on its head and begin to master the art of short selling - essentially, betting
that a company will fail. With the help of a team of Chinese researchers who risk
their freedom to uncover the truth behind these fake companies, the investors
discover the frauds and bet against them in the market. There are no good guys in
this story. But there are a few people who are sick of a financial system built on
lies. The China Hustle follows their story through Wall Street, China and your
retirement savings to uncover the biggest heist you’ve never heard of, and to
challenge all of us to wake up and demand accountability and transparency in our
markets before it’s too late.

Las relaciones entre China y Estados Unidos, que tema difícil de describir, sobre
todo teniendo en cuenta las distintas aristas que existen. Las dos economías más
grandes del mundo tienen una estrecha relación económica, aunque está en los
últimos años estuvo manchada por una guerra comercial que comenzó el
nacionalismo de Donald Trump y el sueño de ser gigante de Xi Jinping.

Sin embargo, ambos países llevan una relación financiera desde hace
aproximadamente 10 años, cuando ocurrió la crisis de 2008 y el boom comercial
chino.

Pero ¿qué pasa cuando una relación financiera está basada en estafas que
comenzaron hace 10 años, pero todavía siguen activas, sin castigar y engañando
a los inversores? Esto es lo que retrata el documental: "The China Hustle" ("La
estafa China" en español).

Las conversaciones entre China y Estados Unidos para intentar llegar a un

acuerdo, ya comenzaron. Y si bien no tienen ánimos de llegar a soluciones, ni
siquiera a conclusiones optimistas, por lo menos se puede ver como un avance en
la guerra comercial en la que están envueltos ambos países desde 2018.

La incertidumbre que provoca esta situación tiene consecuencia directa sobre las
economías globales, así lo demostraron los Bancos Centrales de los distintos
países meses anteriores cuando se desesperaron para bajar las tasas de interés. 

Aunque también tiene grandes consecuencias en la Bolsa de Valores de ambos

países, es así como por ejemplo este miércoles 09/10, "las acciones
estadounidenses redujeron las ganancias y el dólar se debilitó después de un
informe de que China ha reducido las expectativas de un acuerdo comercial antes
de las conversaciones con la administración Trump", así lo explicó la agencia de
noticias, Bloomberg. Esto es a lo que quería llegar: la relación financiera y bursátil
de ambos países. Si nos ponemos a pensar, nadie sabe definir exactamente qué
es el capitalismo, como funciona la Bolsa de Valores y quien está detrás de cada
una de las empresas que aparecen en Wall Street. Dudas como estas son las que
viene a aclarar la película, The China Hustle.

Muchos, como la publicación Forbes, la calificaron como la mejor película del

2018, mientras otros como los críticos del Washington Post solamente le dieron 3
estrellas.
