5897 Business Depository

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The NCR 5897 Business Depository provides a secure and
convenient way for business to make bag or envelope deposits. It is
designed as a sidecar unit to fit alongside Personas 70/73/74/75/77
and 4th generation 5670/74/75 NCR in-lobby ATMs or as a
standalone depository.

NOTE: Rear Access ATMs are not supported as hosts for the 5897
Business Depository.

VARIANTS
The 5897 Business Depository (BD) is available in a number of
model variants, as follows.
Personas, Left-Hand Sidecar Location (5877 ATM)
 Personas, Right-Hand Sidecar Location (5873, 5870, 5874 and
5975 ATMs).
 Personas, Standalone Depository
 56XX, Right-Hand Sidecar Location (5670, 5674 and 5675
ATMs).
 56XX, Standalone Depository.

OPTIONS
The following options are available for the 5897 BD:

Secondary Lock
One key/combination lock is provided as standard, a second key/
combination lock may be ordered as an optional extra.

Alarms

Seismic Detector
A Seismic Detector can be fitted to detect attacks on the
depository safe. The detector is able to detect vibration, heat and
physical attack on the safe and is sensitive in ranges synonymous
with drilling and tampering.

Silent Alarm
An optional combination lock with a silent alarm function can be
fitted as an alternative to the standard key/combination lock. A
silent alarm is initiated when the operator is forced to open the safe
under duress. The use of a preset duress combination will open the
safe, but will automatically trigger a silent alarm condition.

Vibration Sensor
An optional simple, low cost Vibration Sensor can be fitted on the
safe door to detect vibration and heat by means of a sprung gauge
device.

Envelope Slot
The depository head can be configured to allow envelope deposits
without the need to unlock the depository door. The door can be
opened slightly to form an envelope slot to allow non-key or card-
holders to make deposits on behalf of an account-holder.

POWER REQUIREMENTS
Voltage: 110-125V AC or 220-240V AC
Frequency: 50-60Hz
Current: 0.5A
Alarm System: 12V DC 200mA max

OPERATION
The BD can be unlocked either directly with a key for use like a
traditional night safe, or via an ATM to enable account update and
issue of a receipt of deposit showing date, time amount and
location. When used in conjunction with an ATM, the deposit
functionality is driven through the Remote Relay/Night Deposit
Interface feature F310/K310 in the host ATM.
The depository head can be opened with a security key, or when
used in conjunction with an ATM, by inserting a valid magnetic
card in the ATM, entering a valid PIN number and selecting the
Deposit function.
When a bag is inserted in the head and the head door closed,
the deposit will fall into the security enclosure.

NOTE: When the Envelope Slot feature is configured, envelopes

may be deposited without the use of a security key or magnetic
card.

When the head door is closed and a deposit passes from the
head to the security enclosure, it is detected by a ring of
sensors located at the throat of the depository. The sensor ring
controls the operation of the head solenoid, as follows:
When a bag passes through the ring of sensors, the head
solenoid will automatically lock, preventing any further
deposits until the head door is next unlocked using the key,
or via the ATM.
If the security enclosure is full and a bag in the security
enclosure is continuously detected by the ring of sensors,
the head solenoid will automatically lock preventing any
further deposits.
If a bag jams, the head solenoid will automatically lock
until the blockage is cleared.

TROUBLESHOOTING

CONTROL BOARD

The Control Board is protected by a 24V 2A fuse (NCR Part No.

007-9816789) and contains two status LEDs as follows:

LED 1 (Green): Sensor Status

LED 2 (Red): Control Board Status
The green LED 1 will be on if there is no obstruction in the
sensor ring in the throat of the depository and will be off if one or
more sensors are blocked.
The red LED 2 will be blinking if the processor on the control
board is functioning correctly and either on or off if there is a fault.
There is a two-position jumper (S5) on the control board. This
jumper is not used in the 5897 depository and must be left in the
OPERATE position

SENSOR FIELD
The Sensor Field shown below is held in place in the throat of the
depository by two brackets welded to the top of the depository base.
The sensor field comprises four sensor boards, as follows:
Front sensor board - 6 sensors
Rear sensor board - 6 sensors
Left sensor Board - 4 sensors
Right sensor board - 4 sensors
To remove the Sensor Field, remove the L bracket which holds
the Sensor Field assembly in place by removing two screws. Pull
the Sensor Field towards the rear of the depository until it is clear
of the mounting brackets.

Possible Sensor Field Problems

There are two conditions that could be caused by a problem
with the sensor field: either a full condition being indicated
constantly, or no indication when a deposit is made. In order to
isolate the problem to the sensor field, you must first determine
that the processor board is functioning correctly by removing the
cover from the control board at the rear of the security enclosure
and observing the red LED on the processor board.
If the control board is functioning correctly, the red LED will be
flashing.

Isolating Sensor Field Problems

It is possible to isolate sensor field problems to two out of four
boards in the sensor field assembly. In order to do this, it is neces-
sary to remove the sensor field , as follows:
1. Remove the two screws on the L bracket holding the sensor field
in place.
2. Pull the sensor field towards the rear of the depository until it
is clear of the mounting brackets.

A Constant Full Condition Indicated

In this case, the control board LED 1 is off when there is no
obstruction in the Sensor Field. Proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect plugs A and C.
2. Observe the green LED 1 on the control board. The LED should
turn to on.

18.7-8
5897 BUSINESS DEPOSITORY

3. If LED 1 changes to on, the problem is either the front or rear

(six sensor) boards. They can be swapped one at a time to
determine which one is defective.
4. If LED 1 remains off, you can assume that one of the side (four
sensor) boards, or the wiring harness is defective.
5. Reconnect plugs A and C, and disconnect plugs B and D.
6. Observe LED 1 again. If LED 1 changes to on, the problem is on
either the left or right side boards and they can be swapped one
at a time to determine which one is defective,
7. If the indicators do not change state you should replace or
repair the wiring harness.

No Indication of Deposits Made

If the sensor field fails to detect deposits either constantly or
intermittently, proceed as follows:
1. Block the path of each individual sensor around the sensor field
assembly.
2. Observe the green LED on the control board. The LED should
extinguish when any of the sensor paths is blocked. If the LED
does not extinguish, replace the sensor boards one at a time to
determine which one is defective.

ACCESSING THE HEAD ASSEMBLY ELECTRICAL PARTS

The head assembly must be moved out of the main body of the
depository to gain access to the Keylock Switch, Head Solenoid and
Head Movement Switch, which are all to be found on the right-hand
side of the head assembly.
Two M12 bolts secure the head assembly to the main body of
the depository. These bolts can be accessed by reaching up from the
secure enclosure as shown.
Remove the two M12 head fixing bolts.

The head can then be withdrawn forward approximately 10in

(250mm) until held by the restraining cable, as shown in the follow-
ing illustrations.

WARNING

Do not use the hopper handle to pull the head

forward while the head solenoid is in the locked
position. This could damage the solenoid bolt.
