track 3 of both embossed and unembossed magnetic cards.

The 3 Track MCRW communicates with the SSFT through an SDC inter-
face which controls all card movements and manages all the following
MCRW functions:
 Detect the insertion of a card of the correct width containing flux transi-
tions (normally encoded data) on track 2 or 3 of the magnetic stripe
 Move the card through the unit
 Detect the position of the card in the unit
 Read data from tracks 1, 2, 3 simultaneously, in both forward and back-
ward directions
 Write data on tracks 1, 2 and 3 in the forward direction only (towards the
rear of the unit)
 Read the data on tracks 1, 2 and 3 after it has been written
 Eject or Capture the card.

STRAPPING

MCRW CONTROLLER BOARD

The mode of operation of the SDC Board is set on the configuration switch
pack. In the tables below the position of the switches is denoted as follows:
 1 = switch closed (on)
 0 = switch open (off)
 x = don't care.
The configuration switch pack U1 is used to select the mode of operation
of the board as follows:

Switch Mode
8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
0 0 x x x x x x Normal
0 1 x x x x x x Burn-in/Replica
1 x x x x x x x Diagnostic

Normal Mode
In normal mode switches 6 to 1 are ignored by the MCRW device firmware
and only one card reader is present in the system.

9.7-2 NOVEMBER 2013

3-TRACK WRITE MAGNETIC CARD READER WRITER

Burn-in/Replica Mode
In burn-in/replica mode switches 3 to 1 are used to select the link address
where the MCRW resides in the system. Up to eight MCRW can be present
during burn-in mode, occupying link addresses 1 to 8.

Level 0 Diagnostics Mode

In level 0 diagnostic mode a series of switch selectable tests can be carried out
on the SDC node (refer to Chapter 4.2.6).

MCWR ENHANCED CARD DRIVE (ECD)

NOTE: When the MCWR modules are fitted with the Enhanced Card Drive
(ECD) the following observations should be made:

 The card may move slower and vibrate slightly during accept and eject
cycles. This action is normal.

ADJUSTMENTS
This section details the adjustments that can be made to the MCRW.

TOOLS AND TEST EQUIPMENT

The following tools and test equipment are required when performing the
adjustment procedures:
 Digital voltmeter (Beckman 3010, part no. 603-9004750) or equivalent
 Feeler gauge
 5.5mm spanner
 1.5mm Allen Key
 Cleaning card (NCR Part No. 998-0052929)
 ISO test card (NCR Part No. 009-0017008)
 ISO speed test card (NCR Part No. 009-0003479) - This card is encoded
under very strictly controlled conditions

NOTE: If data is written on to track 3 of the ISO speed test card, it cannot
be used again for speed tests.

3-TRACK WRITE MAGNETIC CARD READER WRITER

MOTOR SPEED
Adjust as follows:
 Using the level 1 diagnostics, run the speed test inserting the speed test
card into the MCRW
 Check the M-status returned as shown in the following table. If other than
24 adjust VR1 on the MCRW control board to obtain correct status
 Eject card.

M-Status Meaning
22 Speed too fast
23 Speed within +3%
24 Speed within ±1%
25 Speed within -3%
26 Speed too slow

CARD DETECT SWITCH (SW1)

A ST-SW test card is required for the adjustment of SW1. If a ST-SW test card
is not available a suitable test card can be made from a standard card (refer to
the following diagram).

Adjust SW1 as follows:

1. Disconnect CON G from the MCRW control board.
2. Connect a meter, set to measure resistance, between pins A3 and B2 on
CON G.

9.7-4 NOVEMBER 2013

3. Insert the ST-SW test card into the MCRW until the actuator arm of SW1
is in contact with position B of the test card.
4. Check the meter indicates continuity.
5. If necessary, loosen the screw securing SW1 and position the switch to
obtain the correct indication on the meter
6. Tighten the securing screw.
7. Withdraw the test card until the switch actuator arm is in contact with
position A of the test card.
8. Check that the meter indicates open circuit.
9. If necessary repeat steps 3 to 8 as required.
10. Disconnect and remove the meter.
11. Reconnect CON G to the MCRW control board.

SHUTTER SWITCH (SW2)

Adjust SW2 as follows:
1. Manually open the shutter and insert a card into the MCRW, release the
shutter.
2. Connect a meter, set to measure resistance, between the COM and NO
contacts of SW2 (B3 and B4 on CON G).
3. Check the meter indicates continuity. If necessary, loosen screw A and
move SW2 to obtain the correct indication.
4. With the solenoid plunger depressed, check, on SW2, that the gap
between the actuator arm and the body is 0.2mm (0.008in.). If necessary
move SW2 to obtain the correct gap.
5. With the solenoid plunger depressed, check the gap between the top of the
actuator arm of SW2 and the bottom of the shutter is between 0.5mm and
2mm (0.02in. and 0.08in.). If necessary loosen screw B and move SW2 to
obtain the correct gap.
6. Release the solenoid plunger.
