15 in. Analog LCD with Touchscreen

INTRODUCTION
This chapter describes the 15 inch Analog Colour Liquid Crystal
Display (LCD) with touchscreen.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 15 inch analog LCD with Touchscreen is a high resolution,
standard bright (indoor use) display which incorporates a 15 Active
Matrix LCD panel with a display resolution of 1024 x 768 (XGA)
and 262,144 colors (6bits/color). The unit incorporates a Surface
Acoustic Wave (SAW) Touch Panel and controller which
communicates with the core via an RS232 interface.
The unit’s video interface accepts standard analog VGA signals
and formats them for display on the LCD. The display automati-

area of the display. The video interface is via a standard 15 pin
VGA receptacle.

SELF TESTS

DISPLAY
A simple self test of the LCD Monitor can be carried out on demand
by selecting MONITOR from the Device Self Test Menu. When the
RUN TEST button is selected, the screen will display the letter “H”
repeatedly on a light blue background. On completion of the self
test, the result is displayed on a summary report.

TOUCHSCREEN
A simple self test of the touchscreen sensors can be carried out on
demand, by selecting TOUCHSCREEN from the Device Self Test
Menu. When the RUN TEST button is selected, the screen will
prompt the user to touch anywhere on the screen. On completion of
the self test, the result is displayed on a summary report.

ADJUSTMENTS
There are no field serviceable parts inside the display. Failed units
should be returned for repair. Do not attempt to open the unit.

TOUCHSCREEN CALIBRATION
The Self-Service Configuration Menu for the Touchscreen enables
calibration of the touchscreen sensors.
This procedure should be undertaken when:
 The terminal is initially installed.
The touchscreen is replaced or moved.
The display is adjusted for position.
The touch area on the screen does not line up with the corre-
sponding image.
During this test a light blue screen is displayed with a red tar-
get on the top left of the screen, and the words Touch the Target
from a position of normal use in the centre of the screen. When the
target is touched, the co-ordinates are stored, and the target moves
to a position on the bottom right of the screen, then to the top right
of the screen.
You are then prompted to touch different areas of the screen
and to check that the cursor jumps to your fingertip on all occa-
sions.
To carry out the test, proceed as follows:
1. Select SELF-SERVICE CONFIGURATION MENU from the
Systems Applications Main Menu.
2. Select SET DEVICE CONFIGURATION from the Self-Service
Configuration Menu.
3. Select SAW TOUCH SCREEN from the Set Device Configura-
tion Menu.
4. Touch the target in the three positions to record the touch co-
ordinates.
5. Touch different areas of the screen and note that the screen cur-
sor always jumps to your fingertip.
6. Touch Yes if the test is satisfactory, or No if the cursor fails to
respond correctly.

NOTE: If you touch No, you must repeat the calibration.

DISPLAY ALIGNMENT
This adjustment procedure should be followed to align or center the
display picture on the screen.

NOTE: Do not change parameters within the menus of the dis-

play.

This procedure should be undertaken when:

 The display is replaced.
The display picture is not centered or aligned properly on the
screen.
The display may automatically adjust itself on first power-up
depending on the sequence of the windows displayed during the
operating system startup. However failing that, the adjustment
needs to be done manually by pressing the “Auto/Select Button”
once for each video mode used in the application.
To carry out the test, proceed as follows:
1. This adjustment must be done while the display background is
filled with video. It must not be done during the BIOS screens
or the Systems Applications Menu screens which have black
backgrounds with very little video.
2. Do the adjustment while the Windows Desktop screen is dis-
played during boot-up or while the Customer Application screen
is being displayed. The adjustment must be done in the SVGA
(800x600) or XGA (1024x768) video resolutions, which ever res-
olution is used by the customer.
3. Press and release the Auto/Select Button on the rear of the dis-
play while the display is showing the video mode that needs to
be centered. The display will respond with the On Screen Dis-
play (OSD) message “Auto In Progress” and the video should

Application screen is centered correctly before leaving the site.
If not then press the Auto/Select Button while the Customer
Application is being displayed.

REPLACING THE DISPLAY ASSEMBLY ON THE P78

Repairs to faulty displays will take place at a rework centre. There
are no field serviceable parts in the display. To replace a faulty
display, proceed as follows:
1. Switch off the terminal.
2. Turn the display inwards as described under “Turning the Dis-
play”.
3. Remove the three connectors from the edge of the screen.
4. Support the screen and remove the two bolts securing the
screen assembly to the retraction slides.
5. Remove and retain the display bracket from the edge of the
LCD display (located on the edge opposite to where the cables
plug into the display) by removing the two screws securing it.

6. Transfer this display bracket to the new display.

7. Fit the replacement screen in the reverse order and switch on
the terminal.
8. Perform a “Touchscreen Calibration” as previously described.
9. Be sure to confirm that the “Customer Application” screen is
centered correctly before leaving the site. Perform the “Display
Adjustment Procedure” as previously described if the display is
not centered.
