 ADDICTED TO SHERLOCK HOLMES

I prefer a novel with long stories, has different and thriving plots and themes of crime
and mystery. The tale has the feel of describing a story that revolves around criminal acts and
prosecutions. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is one of the kinds and unbelievably
amazing. Sherlock Holmes is a fiction crime novel that needs to be discovered by modern folk
youngsters in the 21st century. The writer, Arthur Conan Doyle lived a varied and adventurous
life. He was a historian, whaler, athlete, and spiritualist. He studied medicine at Edinburgh and
lived in London, his very little practice, on the other hand, left him with a lot of free time. It was
then he began to write Sherlock Holmes. He left medicine to devote himself to writing. Even
though he wrote a variety of adventure and historical romance novels, it was his Sherlock
Holmes detective fiction that made him famous. The stories are so captivating. To this day and
now, I still keep searching for the original novels without the introduction written by some new
editors that summarized the stories. There are plenty of reasons why I am so fascinated by
Arthur Conan’s works and make me keep reading them.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote and published fifty-six short stories and four novels in the
Sherlock Holmes series. I only have two novels and five short stories in English. Since it was
hard to find the original and English-translated Sherlock novels. These stories will make
readers entertained for hours. So, this is one of the reasons to read Sherlock Holmes. They
are full of mystery and tension, and each one casts distinctive characters that provide plenty of
excitement. It is difficult to get bored with these tales because they are so engaging. In
addition, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle always wrote the dedication on his book page to his beloved
friends who inspired him to write such tales before he began to start the story. He was so
respectful to others. As we have already known that Conan Doyle lived in England, so the
Sherlock Holmes stories always circled the setting of an old London, England. The stories not
only include adventure in crime, but I can also capture the new experience and knowledge
through history, society issues, academic, and economic raising in old London and overseas in
the perspective of different characters in Sherlock Holmes.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Sherlock Holmes stories is that they are erratic
and unpredictable. Sometimes detective story novels often easy to recognize the plot, when

and where will be the crisis, climax, or conclusion. But not with this one. Until the very end,
each story will keep me puzzled. This is especially relevant when I cannot see where Holmes'
clues are leading. Sometimes, the clues he discovers seem insignificant, but in the end, these
seemingly insignificant clues are what solve the mystery. If we talk about the main character,
Sherlock Holmes himself is one of the best fictional characters that Conan Doyle created. We
can say dependability, honesty, sentimentality, a lack of emotion and a show of dominance are
only a few examples of his personality. While he represents our anxieties about life and works,
the character of Sherlock Holmes has remained a conceptual obsession, a case to be solved.
He is the type of round character, the most interesting and influencing kind of person. Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle would never make the readers fancy only one character. So many of the
characters in these tales are out of the ordinary. I may add Dr. Watson who is the narrator of
the Sherlock Holmes stories and also becomes Sherlock’s flatmate and his only friend. He
sees into any of the characters in his point of view. He is perfect to be the partner of Sherlock
Holmes. Though he is the type of a round character too.

It is fair to presume that some of the stories in detective series are similar and have the
same basic plots because there are so many, but not in Sherlock Holmes. Each novel,
however, is distinct from the others. “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” for example, is very
distinct from “A Study in Scarlet.” The mystery is strengthened by the diversity of each plot. In
addition, there are many specific basic plots we can find in “Study in Scarlet”. For instance, at
the beginning of the story, Conan Doyle provided the basic plot of ‘escape’ as the hostages
trying to kill themselves by taking the drugs provided by the killer. But then, at the spur
moment, Sherlock tries to investigate the matter of murders taking us back to basic plots in
terms of ‘rescue, adventure, pursuit, revenge’ and not to mention ‘the riddle’. The Sherlock
Holmes stories are thrilling due to the mixture of complex mysteries and odd characters. I used
to stay up late reading them and would finish them all in one sitting. Even though I only read
some of them on e-books. I would remember what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had written in his
books. This one makes me observe people in silence and makes me start writing, such as
“The world is full of obvious things which nobody ever observed”. The second one is
“Education never ends, Watson. It is a series of lessons, with the greatest for the last” I have
known Sherlock Holmes since I was in High School, and this quote is one of the reasons why I
want to continue my study.

In conclusion, the reason why I am addicted to Sherlock Holmes is that the series of
novels and short stories are not in small numbers. It keeps me entertained to read.

Furthermore, the stories are erratic and unpredictable, and the characters are unusual. Hence,
the stories and the plots are widened out excellently.
