DETAILS

Real engines on test beds can be fitted with pressure and volume transducers to produce real
time pressure - volume diagrams. These are commonly known as Indicator Diagrams. You
can find pictures of these and much else on the internet or other published sources.

1. Explain with diagrams the difference between the ideal or air standard cycles for a
spark ignition engine and a compression ignition engine.

2. Explain with diagrams the difference between a real indicator diagram and the ideal
cycle for both the 2 stroke and a 4 stroke diesel and spark ignition engines.

3. Define the term Indicated Power and explain how it is measured using indicator
diagrams.

4. Explain the term Brake Power and how it is measured.

5. Define the term Mechanical Efficiency and explain the reasons for the loss in power
between the indicated and brake powers.
