WORKSHOP 2: Precedents Analysis & Conceptual Modelling

Discussion on precedents
Physical model-making activity at home

Objectives
1. To draw lessons and ideas from precedents.

2. To initiate the design process through the exploration of conceptual massing options based on
cluster organization in model form.

Task
1. Students will be briefed on Workshop 2 in Project 2 Briefing and will discuss preparation with their

tutors on Monday 3 May, after the Site Analysis presentation.


2. On Thursday 6 May, students are to come prepared with:
- a selection of related design precedents to be discussed with their respective
tutors.
- students will have to already identify main conceptual ideas from their selected precedents
and prepare draft annotated plans and sections. (Refer to Fig.1)
- after discussing their precedents, students will work on exploratory physical
models of conceptual ideas based on the selected precedents as well as their understanding
of the site and program. (Refer to Fig.2)

- for the modelling exercise, each student is to prepare a simple A3 sized base for the model,
with drawing of the site and immediate context printed on it at an appropriate scale.

Outcome

1. Students will produce a 4 page, A4 sized booklet (portrait).

2. This booklet will made up of 2 pages of annotated precedents and 2 pages of photos of the
exploratory models.

3. Students are to save the booklet as a PDF-format file not exceeding 10MB, well- compressed

without compromising the resolution, to be labelled as “fullname_W2.pdf”, for example


“nazmianuar_W2.pdf”.

Submission, Feedback and Assessment

1. The PDF booklet must be uploaded to a provided Google Drive link, no later than 6pm on Friday 7

May 2021.

2. Students participation and completion of the workshop task will contribute to the overall marks

of the semester.
