THE PREAMBLE

• The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)

reported in June 2018 issue of Aerospace America:

– “… The Pentagon reported to Congress earlier this year (2018) that

China has conducted 20 times as many hypersonic flight tests as the
U.S. The most noteworthy recent test was in November, when China
flew a new hypersonic missile, the DF-17, …….
– …. hypersonic flight, ……………….., could be a handy way to travel, but
for the leaders in this field — China, Russia and the U.S.— the emphasis
has shifted to weapons. “

HOW DOES HSWT WORK??

Option1: glide & descend to

hypersonic speeds – BGM

Option2: Use a scramjet

engine to accelerate - HCM

THE NEED FOR HYPERSONIC WEAPONS
TECHNOLOGY
• Case for Hypersonic Weapons Technology
– The Congressional Research Service (June 2021 issue) reported:
– “ The Pentagon’s FY2022 budget request for hypersonic-related
research is $3.8billion—up from $3.2 billion in the FY2021 request.
– ……………… growing support for weapons that could attack priority
targets promptly and with improved accuracy without facing defeat by
an adversary’s air or missile defense systems……….
– ……….. officials have also expressed concerns about advances in
hypersonic weapons technologies in Russia and China, ………. “

HYPERSONIC WEAPONS TECHNOLOGY IN
WARFARE
• CONCEPT
– PROMPT, ACCURATE & UNDEFEATED
– A ultra high speed, low-detectability, high survivability,
long-range platform capable of delivering conventional
and/or nuclear payloads

– Ultra high speed >>>> Hypersonic (Mach > 5)

– Low detectability >>> Depressed Trajectory (below the radar)
– High survivability >>> high maneuverability , high-altitude

HYPERSONIC TECHNOLOGIES OF FUTURE
WARFARE
• Two Types of Hypersonic Weapons Technologies
– 1. Hypersonic (Rocket) Boost-Glide System – HGV, BGV, HBGV….
– 2. Hypersonic Cruise Missile (Airbreathing Scramjet) System – HCV or HCM

HYPERSONIC TECHNOLOGIES OF FUTURE
WARFARE
• The Characteristics of Hypersonic Weapons
– The hypersonic BGV places a maneuverable glide vehicle while HCV
places a scramjet propelled vehicle atop a ballistic missile booster

– Compared with Ballistic Reentry Vehicles

• The ability to maneuver and change course
• Novel trajectory
• Complicates detection, tracking and defense
• Unpredictable HGV’s flight path
• Difficult to predict intended target (terminal phase homing)

HSWs are Hard to Follow, ~1000 -1200 km
HOW
Hard DOES HSWT WORK??
to Destroy

Hypersonic HSW flight

speed plus ~110-120 km paths are too
low & BGV high ~40km
varying flight for SAMs &
path makes too low for
HSW harder HCV ~40-50 km
exo-
to detect, atmospheric
predict & weapons to
intercept be effective
