Learning in the New Normal

They say “Change Doesn’t happen overnight” but with the birth of Covid-19, it has changed how

we live, work and learn in just a snap of time. We can’t do nothing but to adjust and adapt to

what this pandemic has to offer. Making transition to a new normal requires agility and staying

open-minded.

One of the sectors that have been greatly affected with this pandemic is the education sector. For

sure, many students are wondering if how classroom will look like during this trying time. Well,

the most obvious change has been learning shifting from the classroom to the home, with

technology needing to be adopted and improved to accommodate this. So, there are two learning

modalities that were adapted to pursue the high quality education despite the different issues

brought about by the Covid-19. These are Online Distance Learning and the Modular Learning.

First is the Online Distance learning, it is one of the learning modalities that were utilized to

ensure the learning continuity of the students. This modality uses platforms such us Google

meet, zoom, Microsoft and many more platform that would connect people from different parts

of the world. It is like having a class at the comfort of your own home because it is real time but

it limits face-to-face learning, ensure social distancing and decrease the volume of people outside

the home at any given time. Second, the Modular distance learning in which it allows the

learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital copy. The students learn at their

own pace meaning, they have to comprehend each learning module at their own or with the

guidance of a guardian or someone who is more knowledgeable.

With the above mentioned both learning modalities have its good and bad sides. Its good sides

are you can pursue a job along with studies; you can save money and time, you can learn at your

own pace and lastly you can study whenever, wherever. But there’s a flip side of every story,
here are the disadvantages of this modalities first, Chances of distraction is high, Complicated

Technology, quality of faculty compromised, and lastly it lessens the Social interaction which is

very vital to human life.

In conclusion, new normal education is very far different from the way of learning in previous

years. Through online/blended or full modular education learning is possible and I believe that

we will get used to the new way of learning.
