Down Syndrome (also called Trisomy 21)


a. A condition in which a person has an extra chromosome
i. Chromosomes are small packets of genes
ii. The extra chromosome causes physical and mental
changes to the body.
b. Common physical features
i. Short in height
ii. Small hands and feet
iii. Almond shaped eyes
iv. Flat nose bridge
c. Symptoms (Be familiar with this)
i. Intellectual disability (usually mild or moderate)
ii. Poor muscle tone
iii. Cardiovascular issues
iv. Atlantoaxial instability
d. Contraindications (KNOW THIS)
i. Due to poor muscle tone experienced
by children with down syndrome, their
neck is highly mobile, specifically at
the atlantoaxial joint.
ii. As a result, when the child flexes their
neck it could pressure on their spinal
cord
iii. AVOID: neck flexion activities
(headstand/somersault); need
clearance for sports
2. Prader-Willi
a. A genetic condition in which the person is missing chromosome 15 or it’s nonfunctional.
b. Symptoms:
i. immense appetite (eat a lot which can lead to obesity)-KNOW THIS
ii. Intellectual disability (usually mild to moderate)
iii. Short in height
iv. Behavioral issues (tantrums)
3. Fragile X Syndrome
a. A condition caused by changes in genetic material which mainly
affects brain function. Symptoms:
i. Intellectual disability (difficulty learning and with
functional tasks)
ii. Large ears and hypermobile
4. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
a. A condition caused by a woman drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
b. Symptoms:
i. Abnormal facial features
ii. Growth problems
iii. Intellectual disability (problems with learning and functional skills)

Note: As you may have noticed, all of these types of syndromes lead to some degree of intellectual
disability. In addition, you may have also noticed that these conditions cause changes in the body’s
appearances. You do not have to memorize the information, but it is good to become aware of what
they are. I would highly suggest memorizing the red areas.
