Maths arithmetic
Paper 1: instructions
It is expected the test will take 20 minutes to complete, but it is not strictly timed.
Allow your child a break if you feel they need it at any point.
Your child will need a blue / black pen or a dark pencil. You may allow them to have
a rubber, but if you would rather not, explain to them that they need to cross out any
wrong answer and write the new answer clearly next to it.
Your child is not allowed any other equipment assistance (a calculator, a ruler, number
squares or number lines) during this test.
You must not help your child with any of the questions, but you may read a question out
loud if this helps them.
First, read the practice question out loud to them. Give them some time to write the
answer down.
They can use the space on the paper for working out.
If they can’t answer a question, it is better to leave it, go on to the next one and then
come back to it later.

Paper 2: instructions
This paper should take approximately 35 minutes to complete, but it does not have to be
strictly timed.
It is up to you to allow your child to have a break at any point during the test, if you feel
they need it.
This paper includes a practice question and 5 aural questions (read out by you for your
child to answer on their paper).
After the aural questions, the time for the remainder of the questions should be
approximately 30 minutes.
Your child will need a blue / black pen or pencil and a ruler (showing cm and mm).
They are not allowed any other equipment.
You must not help your child at all during the test, though you can read a question
out loud if they are struggling.
Encourage them to miss out any questions they get really stuck on.
Explain to your child that if they make a mistake, they must cross it out and write their new
answer really clearly.

Aural questions: instructions
Explain to your child that you are going to start the test by reading some questions out
loud to them. Explain that you will read the question twice only, leaving a gap in between.
Explain that you are going to read out the practice question first:
Ask your child to write their answer in the space provided on their answer sheet.
Now read out the following five questions. Repeat each question once only and give your
child some time to write their answers:
3. Here is a bag of potatoes. What might the weight of the potatoes be:
one kilogram, three centimetres, four degrees Celsius or one litre?
Circle the weight of the potatoes.
4. Frank has 6 sweets. He gives away half. How many sweets has he given
away?
Write your answer in the box.
5. There is 60ml of water in the first bottle. There is 50ml of water in the
second bottle. How much more water is there in the first bottle than
the second bottle?
Write your answer in the box.
Now explain to your child that they need to do the rest of the test by themselves.
