WHAT IS BIG DATA?

 Is Big Data just about the size or volume of data? It’s not just about the “big” amounts of data being
collected.
 Big Data refers to the large amounts of data which is pouring in from various data sources and has
different formats.
 Even previously there was huge data which were being stored in databases, but because of the varied
nature of this Data, the traditional relational database systems are incapable of handling this Data.

 The three different formats of big data are:

 Structured: Organized data format with a fixed schema. Ex: RDBMS
 Semi-Structured: Partially organized data which does not have a fixed format. Ex: XML, JSON
 Unstructured: Unorganized data with an unknown schema. Ex: Audio, video files etc.
Characteristics of Big Data

 These are the following characteristics associated with Big Data:

 Volume
 Velocity
 Variety
 Veracity
 Value

WHAT IS BIG DATA ANALYTICS?

Big Data analytics is the process of collecting, organizing and analyzing large sets of data (called Big Data)
to discover patterns and other useful information. Big Data analytics can help organizations to better
understand the information contained within the data and will also help identify the data that is most
important to the business and future business decisions. Analysts working with Big Data typically want
the knowledge that comes from analyzing the data.
The importance of Big Data Analytics
Driven by specialized analytics systems and software, as well as high-powered computing systems, big data
analytics offers various business benefits, including:
 New revenue opportunities
 More effective marketing
 Better customer service
 Improved operational efficiency
 Competitive advantages over rivals

Example for Big Data Analytics

 How Starbucks made use of Big Data to analyze the preferences of their customers to enhance and
personalize their experience.
 They analyzed their member’s coffee buying habits along with their preferred drinks to what time
of day they are usually ordering.
 So, even when people visit a “new” Starbucks location, that store’s point-of-sale system is able to
identify the customer through their smartphone and give the barista their preferred order.
 In addition, based on ordering preferences, their app will suggest new products that the customers
might be interested in trying.
MBA IN BIG DATA ANALYTICS
Having an MBA degree in data analytics is like having the master key for the house and deciding which
door to open.

Once upon a time, that meant looking into the company sales ledger and projecting next quarter’s
performance. Nowadays, companies have massive volumes of data to work with, with today’s digital
purchases tracked right down to the penny and the second. The data (both structured and unstructured) that
businesses collect every day is called Big Data, and it’s as much a corporate asset as a company’s equipment
or securities. But it’s one thing to gather raw data, and another thing to analyze it in order to
generate actionable information. That’s where business analytics comes in.

Here are 3 ways that the Big Data boom could impact your MBA plans:

1) Growing demand for analytics talent: Like mentioned earlier, businesses the world over are making
huge investments into big data. In fact, many companies are forming entire divisions dedicated to Big Data
with the aim to use this data to drive business decisions. These companies need not just data analysts, but
also team leaders and managers who can supervise them. They are depending heavily on B-schools to hire
this talent and with the demand coming from industries as varied as IT, healthcare and retail, there couldn’t
be a better time to get into one.

2) Big data requires interdisciplinary collaboration: There is a growing realization in the business world
that making sense of Big Data is not the sole responsibility of a lone department. A team of data scientists
can only do so much and may find it difficult to keep up with the demands of Big Data after a point. The
effective use of Big Data requires interdisciplinary collaboration. So, a technology team that builds the data
capabilities of a company needs to work hand-in-hand with the business intelligence or analytics team that
uses this data to get a deeper understanding of the business. In fact, the increased spending on technology
by companies in India in the last couple of years is accompanied by a simultaneous rise in the recruitment
of B-school graduates for explicit roles in business analytics.
3) Tech innovations transforming traditional roles: Technological innovations like cloud computing and
data analytics, are transforming traditional MBA roles like finance and marketing. More and more
companies are looking to integrate these technological innovations into their business strategy, leading to
a spurt in demand for business professionals with these skills. For this reason, many business schools have
added courses in business analytics, which are growing in popularity every day.
