About Hyderabad
Hyderabad is the capital city of the state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh of South India.
Located on the Deccan Plateau, Hyderabad is the fifth largest city of India. The 400 year old
city is located on the banks of the River Musi.

Hyderabad was founded by Muhammad Quli Qutab Shah, the fifth sovereign of the Qutab
Shahi dynasty, in the year 1591. Initially, Golconda was the capital of the Qutab Shahi dynasty,
who ruled over Deccan during the period 1512 – 1687.

The name Hyderabad literally means ‘city of Hyder’ since it was named after Queen Hyder

Page 1/13
Mahal, wife of King Qutab Shah. With the help of Iranian architects, Hyderabad was erected in a
grid format. The city was modeled on the city of Isfahan of Iran. With the construction of
Hyderabad city, it became the capital city of Qutb Shahi rulers.

The cultural facet of Hyderabad is distinctly different from the Telugu culture of the rest of
Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad has a rich Hyderabadi culture of its own, a blend of Persian and
Telugu cultures, which flourished under the reign of the Qutab Shahis.

Hyderabad is also known as the ‘City of Nizams’ since it was ruled for a long time by the
Nizams. The Nizams of Hyderabad were famous as the wealthiest royals in the history of India.

Today, Hyderabad is one of the leading centres of information technology. The emerging
Biotech and IT industries have given the city a global platform. The thriving tourism and IT
industries have brought Marriott, Novotel and Taj, the giants in the hospitality industry, to this
metropolis.

Tourists who visit Hyderabad can witness the blend of ancestral heritage and modern
technology. The deep rooted cultural history of Hyderabad is evident from its monuments,
mosques, temples, varied art forms and crafts. The monuments, minarets and mosques of
Hyderabad with its impressive architectural style attract visitors.

Charminar, Jama Masjid, Golconda Fort, Salarjung Museum, Osmania University, Paigah
Tombs, Qutub Shahi Tombs, Raymond Tomb, Birla Mandir, Hussain Sagar, Ramoji Film City,
etc. are some of the popular attractions of the city of Hyderabad.

Hyderabad also celebrates the Deccan Festival is organised by the Department of Tourism,
Andhra Pradesh, every year on 25th February. This five-day long festival reflects the culture
and highlights Hyderabad's arts, crafts, culture and the famous Nawabi cuisine.

The pulsating nightlife of Hyderabad is also a major tourist attraction. The bylanes of the
Charminar and the authentic Hyderabadi and Andhra cuisine has made Hyderabad a haven for
shopaholics and foodies. The best time to visit Hyderabad is October to March.

Hyderabad can be reached from destinations around the country by air, rail and road. There are
two International Airports in Hyderabad, Hyderabad International Airport; Rajiv Gandhi
International Terminal and a domestic terminal; N T Rama Rao Domestic Terminal, connected
with almost all major cities of India and the world.

Secunderabad and Nampalli Railway stations are well connected to all major cities.

The city is also well connected by buses run by the state government and other private
operators to regions within the state as well as neighbouring states.

Featured review about Hyderabad

On a hunt to explore Hyderabadi food
"Me and my partner are a big time foodies. We always try and find places to gorge on its
specialties. Hyderabad being a Mecca for food lovers was a obvious choice for us to visit.
Therefore on foreseeing a long weekend coming, we thought of hunting this place to satiate our
hungry souls . Dreams of quintessential Hyderbadi Biryani, Paya soup, Haleem, Irani chai came
everyday till the time we landed in the magnificent land of Nizams . One point I would like to
highlight here is that food in Hyderabad is **** affordable and the portions are real big. This is
another bonus point of visiting this place . Delicacies to try when you are in old Hyderabad:. 1.
Biryani at Hotel Shadab. 2. Irani Chai and Paya soup with Naan bread at Shah Ghouse. 3.
Haleem at Pista House (in non-ramzan period this is the only place where you will easily get it).
4. Natural fruit ice-cream at Famous Ice-cream. 5. Shrews-bury Biscuit at Subhan Bakery
(Please please try these biscuits and you will fall in love with them) . . When in new Hyderabad,
you can try:. Biryani at Bawarchi (it is super delicious ). Ohri's in Banjara Hills (for a upmarket
restaurant experience). Altogether it was a delicious experience visiting Hyderabad for two
hungry bellies. If you too are food-fanatics, then do not wait and dig into sumptuous
hyderababdi food in the very own land of nizams." - Richa , Bangalore, 2 months ago
Hyderabad, The Biriyani place
"Hyderabad as you all know is a tremendous place to visit because it has got Charminar,
Ramoji Film City, Salar Jung Museum and numerous other places of interest. Salar Jung
Museum is just awesome. It takes plenty of time to go through all the galleries of this great
museum. It is a pride of Hyderabad. So is RFC. But for me it is Bawarchi restaurant where I
dined as long as I stayed in Hyderabad. The biryani served here is mouth watering. Hospitality
tremendous." - Kaushik kumar bhattacharya , , Mar 21, 2017
Amazing City but lack of cleanliness
"I'm a Doctor from the United States and periodically come to India for teaching and surgical
work. I love being in Hyderabad for my work especially to catch up with one of those late night
biryanis apart from visiting the 400+yr charminar and roaming around the old city by walk
watching the tourists buying bangles and pearls. Spending time at Salar Jung Museum is
fascinating especially to look at Turner's marvellous sculpture.

After operating at various hospitals, depending on the place I am, feel like hanging around the

Page 3/13
Tank Bund Lake and Durgam Cheruvu, being my favourite hideout. Love travelling around
Cyberabad watching beautiful Buildings of Software companies and roaming in the campus of
Indian Business School and visit the Filmnagar temple on the way back to Secunderabad to
have my favourite Irani chai and Osmania Biscuits.

Exciting to walk around the Sultan Bazar to watch scores of people shopping for safety pin to
airbags, especially female stuff and head to Birla Temple in the evening to visit Lord
Venkateswara and watch Hyderabad city in the lights.

Don't really miss the Light and Sound show at the magnanimous Golkonda Fort. Never miss my
evening dinner pick up from Sri Kanya in Panjagutta and Sri Krishna Sweets from RP Road. Of
Course love to watch movies at Inox at GVK One.

Very unfair on my part not to mention the world famous Ramoji Film City and love to tour around
if time permits.

But of late, missing the cleanliness and beauty of Hyderabad and also afraid of the ever
increasing traffic and with that pollution. EVEN THEN, LOVE TO BE IN Hyderabad." - Sri , ,

Reliving our associations
"Hyderabad is the city where we spent about 3 decades of the prime of our lives. My husband
and I worked there. Those years were very enriching, quite naturally so, with close interactions
with colleagues in my workplace and with neighbours and acquaintances we could cultivate.
People from different cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds gave us warm company.
Thus got an excellent exposure to a slice of national citizenship and the required perspective to
look at events from the national angle rather than the narrow perspective of one who belongs to
a particular state, linguistic group or religion. Got enchanted with the ambience of different parts
of the city of Hyderabad and the food habits of people from different parts of the country who
live in harmony in the city. Our children spent their childhood and adolescence in this city and
had their entire school education as well as their professional education partially in this city. So
they also developed roots here. My husband and I could visit the offices we served and could
meet old acquaintances. The ambience has changed from the time over a decade before when
we last visited. On the whole this visit was so enjoyable with the intense nostalgia of
associations we left behind a decade ago." - Permesh nair , Kochi, Nov 22, 2016
Place for historical monuments and food lovers
"Hyderabad has a rich history and grand historical places. Lovers of heritage buildings and
architectural enthusiasts will enjoy the place thoroughly. The Golkonda Fort, Mahala Palace,
Nizam Museum, Salarjangh Museum are the places to relish as they bring back memories of
rich history of Hyderabad and Nizam era.
Birla Mandir and Jagganath mandir are tranquil beautiful places with once again lovely
structures.
Ramoji film city is nice experience though its not as big and falls short on expectations of film

Page 4/13
buffs. One would wish for reliving the experience of fav movies rather than passing them by in
tour buses.
There is much for foodies in the city. The city has really delicious food and so many places with
much varieties. Of course the biryani and kabab of Paradise are worth visiting the city on their
own! Besides that there are so many small and big places for different types of kababs,
frankies, rolls, etc. Local dishes are so spicy and deliciously different from northern or Punjabi
food. The pickles are also yummy, and so are deserts such as Frost Stick and Cream Stone ice
creams! Can't have enough!
Overall, Hyderabad is worth spending a week if you wish to thoroughly explore the rich heritage
and food. Rather than rushing like a tourist, its a city worth exploring leisurely for its hidden
delights.
Being a big metro type city it has all facilities and there is no trouble in finding good stay and
conveyance at much reasonable cost." - Jaydeep chhatrapati , , Nov 6, 2016
