Social Media Stars

Eleonor
I found writing very difficult but speaking to the camera was a bit easier for me.
My dad gave me a camera for Christmas, and I started my channel. I make lifestyle
videos, so I talk about everyday things. Some of the topics I cover are fashion,
relationships etc. I like giving advice to people, so I really enjoy what I do. My
channel has become very popular at my school and many of my friends watch my
videos.

Patrick
I always liked listening to the radio, so when I discovered that I could record my
own podcasts and release them, I got started right away. I have a podcast about
technology. I review new devices such as mobile phones or computers. Because I
have many listeners now, companies send me devices to review for free, which is
very useful when they are very expensive. I hope that I will get more listeners so I
can share my technology knowledge with many more people.

Sean
I really like photography, so when I saw that there was a social media site
dedicated to sharing photographs, I was very excited. At first not many people
followed my account but little by little more people became interested in my
photographs so now I have over 10 000 followers. I hope I will be able to get
a better camera soon to improve the quality of my pictures and maybe to go
somewhere exciting so I can take good photos.

Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

Michael Smith
Michael Smith is one of the most popular young singers in the
country. He is now recording his first album which is set to be
released next January. His career started when he was just 15 years
old, when he was discovered by a talent scout who saw one of his
videos on a famous internet website. He started his channel where
he sang covers of famous songs. He became very popular quickly
and started to get many followers.
Now he is playing concerts all over the country which is something
he enjoys very much, ‘I really like to connect with my fans, and I
also like to get to see new places’. When we asked him what he
liked doing in his free time he said ‘I don’t have much free time. I’m
always travelling, or in the studio. But when I get a chance, I like to
spend time with my friends and maybe go for a pizza with them. I
also like to spend quality time with my family’.
Being famous is something that has taken Michael by surprise. ‘I never thought I would become famous so
quickly and it was never my intention. I still get nervous when I see so many people in my concerts, but I’m
sure it will get better with time’.

B: Of course, what happened?
Oliver: Well, normally my parents drive me, but today my dad had a meeting.

Girl: Yes, but they were quite expensive. Especially for a local band.
A: I agree, I heard they were charging up to 25 pounds for a ticket!

bought the cheapest ones.

PART 2
6 10 Pounds, 7 buymyticket, 8 Friday, 9 the cafeteria, 10 food
Ok kids. It’s the end of the year, so we’re organising our end-of-year trip. We decided that this
year we could go to the aquarium. The tickets cost 10 pounds, but if you buy them online, they
are 7 pounds, so please buy them online. The website to get the tickets is www.buymyticket.
com that is: B U Y M Y T I C K E T.com. If your parents have a problem getting the tickets, let me
know. Remember that your parents can use the computers at the school to buy the tickets.
We wanted to organise the trip for next Friday. We normally have class that day, so we will have
the class at the aquarium instead. We will meet by the cafeteria. Then, together, we will go to
the bus which will be waiting for us by the entrance. Remember to bring some food. There is a
restaurant there, but it’s quite expensive so it’s a good idea to bring something to eat.

PART 3
11 A, 12 B, 13 A, 14 B, 15 C
A: So Mark how was your holiday? Where did you go?
Mark: It was great thanks! The plan was to go to the mountains, but my father found a
very good deal on a hotel by the beach. It was really nice.
A: Great. I love the beach. Did you stay there long?
Mark: Only a few days. The hotel was great. At first I was a little scared because there were
a few insects, but the rooms were really comfortable, so we were very happy!
A: Brilliant. I don’t know how I would feel about the insects! I find them very scary!
What was the food like?
Mark: The food was OK for a beach resort. I don’t really like sandwiches, which is what you
could buy at the hotel, but luckily there were a lot of seafood restaurants. You know
how much I love seafood.
A: And was the town nice?
Mark: Not really. There were only restaurants and not much else. I think that’s what I liked
least. The good thing is that the hotel organised a lot of sport activities, and they
were amazing.
A: Sounds like you had a great time and why don’t …….(Sound fades)

Dad: I don’t know. Are there any good films?

Girl: That was definitely the best school trip we’ve had all year.
A: How come?
Girl: This was the first time I had been to the zoo. Seeing so many animals was really nice.
The zoo is a little bit far, which meant we were on the bus for over an hour. And the
tickets were not cheap.
A: Oh dear…
Girl: But it was wonderful. They organised a very nice tour where we got to see all the
animals, and we learned so much. I hope we do it again next year.

some treasure. The movie was very interesting, and the ending very smart. I didn’t
expect it at all!
A: How about this movie Galaxy? Have you seen it?
Boy: I have – and I recommend it. This film was absolutely brilliant. The special effects
were the best I have ever seen. But if you want to laugh a lot, you have to see The
Secret Agent. It’s definitely the comedy of the year. I couldn’t stop laughing!
A: I actually wanted to see The Race.
Boy: Don’t even bother. This movie felt like it was never going to end! I think it was about
4 hours long!
A: Oh dear! That is very long! Do you recommend seeing The Secrets of the Jungle? I

Boy: It is good, but I didn’t expect that I would be frightened the whole time! I thought it
was a family movie, but it certainly wasn’t.
