CUSTOM OF THE CHINCHILPOS AND GAMONALES

The devotion to Tayta Niño motivates the Chinchilpos and Gamonales to face each
other in tough fights that take place in the stadium of the Huayucachi district, located
south of the city of Huancayo

The central days of the Festival are celebrated this year on Thursday, January 31 and
Friday, February 1. On those days, the Zumbanacuy is celebrated, a fight between a
gamonal and a chinchilpo, in the center of the Huayucachi stadium, where the
protagonists whip each other in a time of 20 seconds with specially designed whips.

The chinchilpos, as representatives of the poor who in search of liberation, fight the
gamonales with their whips. In these encounters, courage is a symbol of superiority.
Whoever wins the fight will rule the fate of the people until the next celebrations.
