Date of Lesson: 11/16/18 Subject: Math Grade Level: 3rd

Day # 3 of 4 days in unit Name of unit: 3.MA.3 Multiplication and Division With Real-World
Application
Standard(s) ➔ 3OA.1 = Interpret products of whole numbers
➔ 3OA.2 = Interpret quotients of whole numbers
➔ 3OA.3 = Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word
problems.
➔ 3OA.4/3OA.6 = Determine the unknown whole number in a
multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers
through utilization of fact families
➔ 3OA.5 = Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply
or divide
➔ 3OA.7/3.NBT.3 = Fluently multiply
Day’s Lesson Concept Name of lesson concept: Day 3-Planning a birthday party using basic
multiplication and division
Umbrella Question to be answered with this lesson: Can students fluently
solve multi-step real world problems?
Content Objectives Today the students will learn: What are two or three main things you
want them to learn from your lesson? WRITTEN AS MEASURABLE
OBJECTIVES (use Bloom’s!).
Today students will be able to:
1. Apply multiplication and division to solve a multi-step real
world problem.
2. Demonstrate their understanding of forming equations to solve
multi-step real world problems.
3. Identify key parts to writing a multi-step word problem.
How will you link the new materials to prior learning?
The previous days the students have been working on division and
multiplication real-life activities to show their understanding of when to
divide and when to multiply. I will ask the students to recall what they
have learned and to use it when filling out the worksheet.
Process of Learning What will students do?
1. Students will be asked to participate in a math game that they
have learned before, called Buzz
2. Students will then be instructed to sit down and asked to recall
the activities that we have previously been working on from the
previous days and what they have learned.
a. Ask the students to repeat what they have learned for
the past 2 days.
3. Students will then watch a video from Freckle about the activities
they will be doing
4. After the video I will pass out the worksheets and make sure the
students understand what is being asked of them.
a. Instruct the students to write their name and the date on
the top of their worksheet. *WALK AROUND TO DOUBLE
CHECK*
b. Students will then be asked to repeat what they learned
from the video and what they need to figure out. *Write
answers on the board* THIS WORKSHEET FOCUSES ON
MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION--EXPLAIN THIS TO THE
STUDENTS
5. Next the students will be guided on how to solve the problem(s)
because it is different from the previous days. *Write answers
on the board*
6. Then the students will be broken into their pre-set groups that
they have been working with for the past two days to help them
figure out the problem.
a. Instruct the students to take their worksheet and pencil
with them.
Instruct for after they have finished:
7. Students will be asked to work on Freckle QUIETLY at their desk
until the majority of the groups are done or until time is called.
8. When all students have finished they will all return to their desk,
those will Ipads will put them aside and we will then go over the
worksheets together. *Fill out answers on the board*
9. Finally, students will be instructed to hand their worksheets into
the teacher and to work on Freckle for the remaining class time.
*ACTIVITY MAY VARY DEPENDING ON TIME*
How long will be spent on each part (timing)?
1. 1 minute & 30 seconds
2. 2 minutes
3. 2 minutes
4. 5-7 minutes
a. 1 minute & 30 seconds
b. 5+ minutes
5. 3 minutes *time will vary*
6. 10-15 minutes
7. 1-2 minutes
8. 5 minutes
9. 5 minutes *If time is left*
Will all students be doing the same thing? Yes.
Post assessment How will you know if students understand the content objectives?
Based on the amount of questions the students have and when I look
over their worksheets I will focus on their corrections.
When will assessment occur?
While the students are completing the activity
Instructional Strategies How will you get the student’s attention (hook)?
● Introduction/transitions Mrs. Wade has a math game the students will be asked to participate in.
● Teacher talking The students will have to make a circle around the room and then they
● Questioning will have to say to make a noise on the multiple number that is being
● Student interactions called.
● Individual seat work ➔ If it was the 3’s start counting with 1 then, continue on when you
● Small group work get to 3 a student will have to say Buzz.
● Activity Which strategies are you going to use (list)?
● Lesson closure ● Introduction/transitions
● Teacher talking
● Small group activity
● Questioning
● Lesson Closure
● Individual seat work

How are you going to teach this lesson?

I will begin with a short math game the students seemed to enjoy before.
The I will transition into the activity and ask the students to tell me what
we have been working on for the past few days. After that, I will instruct
the we will be doing another but it might be difficult for the students to
understand so I will then play the Freckle video the students will be
watching. From here, I will then pass out the inquiry sheets the students
will be using and instruct them to write their name and date at the top.
Following this I will repeat what we need to find and then write on the
board the things the students will need to know in order to guide them
to the answer. After this, students will be asked to join their groups they
had previously worked with. After a few minutes students will be asked
to return to their desk and I will then go over the answers. If there is time
remaining I will collect the papers and the students will then work on
Freckle.

How will you summarize and check for understanding?

I will have the students share our their answers they had gotten for the
worksheet when we are in whole group discussion. In addition, I will
collect their papers and look over them to see what they had gotten
wrong and what they had gotten correct. I will ask the students if they
understood the worksheet by giving a thumbs up and check if everything
was cleared for them.
