Netscape Navigator was the first commercial web browser created by Marc Andreessen at the University of Illinois. Released in 1994 originally as Mosaic, it grew rapidly to become the most popular browser by providing an easy and free way for users to access the internet. However, Microsoft saw its success and launched Internet Explorer to compete. While Netscape Navigator innovated and added new features, Internet Explorer eventually overtook it as the most used. Support for Netscape Navigator ended in 2008 as the company focused development on Mozilla Firefox.
