COMM 201 (BIOSTATISTICS) ASSIGNMENT

QUESTION 1:

The distribution of a student of ABU Zaria in a given community is given below

Age Group (Years) Frequency
20 – 29 41
30 – 39 32
40 – 49 17
50 – 59 10
Total 100

Calculate the means, median, mode and standard deviation of the age of this group
of students Solution:
i. The means:

Age group F X FX
20 -29 41 24.5 1004.5
30 – 39 32 34.5 1104
40 – 49 17 44.5 756.5
50 - 59 10 54.5 545
100 3,410

∑ fx fx = f x x
Mean = ∑ f

= 41 x 25.5 = 1004.5
20+29 49
x̅ = 2 = 2 = 24.5 = 32 x 34.5 = 1104
= 17 x 44.5 = 756.5
30+39 69 = 10 x 54.5 = 545
2
= 2 = 34.5

40+ 49 89 Therefore:
2
= 2 = 44.5

∑ fx 3410
50+59 109 Mean = ∑ f = 100 = 34.1
2
= 2 = 54.5

ii. The Median

Age Group F X FX CF
20 – 29 41 24.5 10045 41
30 – 39 32 34.5 1104 72
40 – 49 17 44.5 756.5 89
50 - 59 10 54.5 5450 99
100

99
Median = 2 = 49.5

iii. The mode:

The mode occurs with the frequency that is the highest, which is between 20–
29, having the frequency of 41.

iv. The Standard deviation:

First of all, the variance (S2) is obtained, before getting the standard deviation.
Hence:
∑ f ( x−x́ ) 2
S2 =
(∑ f )−1

Age Group F X x̅ X - x̅ (x – x̅) 2 f (x – x̅) 2

20 – 29 41 24.5 34.1 - 9.6 92.16 3778.56
30 – 39 32 34.5 34.1 0.4 0.16 5.12
40 – 49 17 44.5 34.1 10.4 108.16 1838.72
50 - 59 10 54.5 34.1 20.4 416.16 4161.6
100 9784

∑ f ( x−x́ ) 2 9784 9784

= = 100−1 = 99 = 98.83
(∑ f )−1

Having gotten the variance, the standard deviation can now be solved as follows:
S . D=√ S2 = √98.83 = 9.94

Question 2
During a field trip by 200L Nursing students in Fatika Community, Screening of
exercise for hypertension was conducted among members of the community. Out
of 152 volunteers tested, 21 had raised Bp.
Calculate and interpret 95% confidence interval for the prevalence of hypertension
in the community.

Solution:
Formula: CI = P± CC x SE
CC of 95% CI = 1.96
pq
SE = √ n

CC of 95% = 1.96
P = 21/152 = 0.1381
q = 1 – P = 1 – 0.1381
q = 0.8619
n = 152
pq 0.1381 x 08619 0.1190
SE = √ n = √ 152
= √ 152 = √0.0007832
Therefore, SE = 0.0279

Upper Limit = 95% CI = 0.1381 + 1.96 X 0.0279

95% CI = 0.05853699
≈ 0.0585
Lower Limit = 95% CI = 0.1381 – 1.97 X 0.0279
95% CI = –0.05083101
≈ –0.0508
