Lecture 5
Creativity, Innovation and
Technology

2020-2021
Introduction

• It is generally believed that

creativity enhances innovative
activities.
• Creativity is about coming up
with the big idea. Innovation is
about executing the idea-
converting the idea into a
successful business.
• Creativity improves the
process of solving problems.

2
➢What is difference between innovation and creativity?
❑ Creativity: refers to conceiving a new idea.
Creativity is subjective and based on perceptions, making it hard to measure.

❑ Innovation: converting that idea into a marketable commodity.

Innovation, on the other hand, is completely measurable.

3
➢Creative Practice
• What makes people creative? *
- Find multiple ways of solving a problem.
- Discover relationships, patterns and make connections that are new to
them.
- Guess the results of making changes.

Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or

possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others.

• Individuals with diverse expertise and skills.
- The more duties you can perform, the more needed you will be to an
organization.
- Those with one specialized skillset may be excellent workers but get burned
out on repetitive tasks.
- Diverse Skillsets help you find a better Job or May Lead to More Pay.

5
• How to promote creativity?
- Use the most effective strategies.
- Think of creativity as a skill.
- Explore different cultures.
- Encourage curiosity.

Creativity is a skill, not talent

6
➢Creative Industry Clusters
• The United States has some important, major creative industry clusters, notably
those of Los Angeles (with a particular emphasis on film, television, and music), New
York (with a particular emphasis on publishing and the visual arts), San Francisco
(with particular recent emphasis on digital multimedia).
• In Europe, many creative industry clusters, such as those of London, Paris, and
Milan, have developed at long-established centers of culture.

• It is important to recognize that these creative clusters do not just consist of large
firms. They also involve independent artists and designers, numerous small
businesses, cultural institutions such as galleries and performing arts centers, and
educational institutions.

➢Innovation
Innovation is commonly defined as the "carrying out of new combinations" that include
"the introduction of new goods, ... new methods of production, ... the opening of new
markets, ... the conquest of new sources of supply ... and the carrying out of a new
organization of any industry".

An innovation requires
implementation, either by
being put into active use
or by being made
available for use by other
parties or individuals.

➢Innovation Types Model
Radical innovation ‫االبتكار الجذري‬
“establishes a new dominant design and, hence, a new set of core design
concepts embodied in components that are linked together in a new
architecture.”

Incremental innovation ‫االبتكار تدريجي‬

“refines and extends an established design. Improvement occurs in
individual components, but the underlying core design concepts, and the
links between them, remain the same.”

Architectural innovation ‫ابتكار معماري‬

“refers to the innovation of an architecture of any product that changes or
modifies the way various components of the systems link or relate to each
other.

Modular (Disruptive) Innovation ‫ابتكار معياري‬

“innovation that changes only the core design concepts of a technology”
