Watering Systems
a) Basin and Jar Type
This type of waterer is circular in
nature,its characterized by two
sections i.e. jar for filling water and
basin for delivering water.Clean
drinking water is a critical factor in
poultry production. Your poultry
must always have access to clean
drinking water at all times.
b) Automatic bell drinker
Type
EDUC135
They are normally called bell
drinkers due to their bell shape.
They ensure a continuous flow of
water for the birds throughout the
day. They are fitted with simple
clamp mechanism and valve
(spring-mounted) that controls the
height and rate of flow water.
These drinkers are brightly colored
red to attract layers. No. of bell-
drinkers=1.3*(circumference÷
Drinker space)
c) Manual Bell drinker Type
This type of waterer is normally
used for baby chicks and chickens
that are reared using the free-
range method. This is because of
ease of application of antibiotics
during chick vaccination.They can
also be used for both floor rearing
and cage rearing.These equipment
should be placed at an interval of
0.7m to avoid congestion.
 d) Chicken Nipple Drinker
Type
Normally used both in deep-litter
and in cage system. In deep-litter
system, it is connected to pipes
that cut across the coop and
attached to cups that prevent
water drops from wetting the litter
material.In cage system, it is fitted
along the cage compartments and
is commonly used in laying
cages.One nipple drinker serves
four chicken in each cage
compartment.
“Poultry Feeding Systems”
a) Linear Trough Feeder
Type
Linear Chick Feeder is ideal for
those starting off with poultry
rearing.The Linear feeder has an
efficient snap closure that is easy
to lock preventing accidental
spillage.The downside to poultry
troughs is that chickens can stand
in them. Meaning you hens are
likely to waste feed by scratching,
and flicking food, over the feeder
sides.The top of the feeder should
therefore incorporate an anti-perch
bar that will prevent chicks fouling
the feed.
b) Circular Trough Feeder

Round Galvanised Feeder Pan for
Chick Feeding. For food or water.
Particularly useful for small chicks
or ducklings.Please note: There is
always a danger of very young
 chicks drowning in open pans of
water so keep the water shallow or
add pebbles to prevent drowning.

a) Infrared bulb/ Ceramic
Bulb Type
With infrared brooders there is no
fuel to carry, no ashes to remove,
no burners to clean. Brooders are
light in weight, and are easy to set
up, move, and store.The price of
readymade infrared brooders
ranges from KES 1000 to KES
1800, depending on the number of
lamps, type of brooder, and
whether they have thermostats.
You can build an infrared brooder
from plans available from the
internet.
b) Gas Brooder Type
This includes a perforated pan-
covered burner at the base of the
structure which the warms the pan
transfering the heat to the
environment
conventionally.Brooders are kept
within 32-34 degrees from the first 
day the chicks are introduced. The
temperature is reduced slowly the
fourth week, when the chicks have
enough feathers to help them
regulate temperatures without
external help.Farmers should have
a thermometer to determine the
temperature of the brooder.

c) Charcoal stove / Kerosene
