ABSTRACT

Whether you want to camp on a cliff above the ocean or sleep in a tent deep in the forest,
camping helps you get away from it all. But one of the hardest parts of camping wherever
you like to be is finding that perfect campground. Smart camping will help finding and
booking a safe campsite easier than ever for residents in Mombasa county. They will be
able to search by location. Surprisingly, limited research has been done on the business
and market segments of campgrounds and their safety. There are situations where
campers in Mombasa city do not know any camping grounds in the city or slightly
outside the city. Therefore, the main objective of this system will be to help finding and
booking a safe campsite easier and will allow licensed camp owners to add their camping
grounds to the system database so as new comers or residents who want to camp and are
not aware of safe camping sites can have easy access to this recreational activity. This
will also provide customer reach to the camp owners. Campers will be able to see reviews
of other campers and the ratings of each camp site. Campers will also be able to see
information about each camp site like the charges per night. The proposed system will be
user friendly. It will help campers find a camp site in a short time using their mobile
phones as long as they have internet connection. It will also allow payment using credit
cards and M-Pesa. This project will impact community of families in Mombasa and their
camping experience. The research questions are: how will this online camping influence
its participants? What is the most appropriate design for a web-based system that links
campers and camp owners? Limitation that will likely be encountered is that it will be
compulsory for users to have internet connection which can be costly.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Finding a camping site for a new camper in Mombasa is time consuming and also dangerous as
you may find desperate campers camping in a restricted, dangerous or prohibited sites without
their knowledge. This could cause an innocent’s camper’s life. In Mombasa County, there are
cases where campers go to camp in restricted areas without their knowledge and are attacked by
wild animals like poisonous snakes, hyenas and bears.

1.2 GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this project, is to design a web application that will allow camp owners in
Mombasa to add their camping grounds to the system database, it will allow campers to rate and
review any camping ground. Campers will be able to provide feedback by commenting.

1.3 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

1. To develop a design system.

2. To test the system.
3. To provide campers ease of access to camping sites.
4. To assure campers of safe Camp sites.
5. To enable customer reach for the camp owners.
6. To encourage the activity, camping.

1.4 Research Questions

I. What are the information needs for campers who want to camp in Mombasa
II. What is the most appropriate design for a web-based system that links campers and camp
owners?
III. What is the most appropriate platform for developing the designed web based system?
IV. What tests can ascertain the functionality of the developed system?

1.5 Significance

This proposed web-based application will aid in helping campers ease of access to safe and
licensed camp sites to avoid unnecessary delays for the campers, ensure campers camp safely
and also it will be of advantage to camp owners as they will be able to find market reach for their
camp sites.

1.6 Assumptions

I. We assume that all the campers and camp owners will have access to the system through
the internet.
II. We assume that all campers and camp owners will have android phones or computers to
access the system.
III. We assume that all the camp sites from camp owners will be needed by potential
campers.
