LEAD -ACID MARINE BATTERY SERVICE MANUAL IN GENERAL, THE BATTERY HANDLING MAY HAVE A GREAT INFLUENCE ON THE BATTERY PERFORMANCE AS WELLAS ITS SERVICE LIFE. IT IS, THEREFORE, DESIRED THAT THE BATTERY IS PUT INTO SERVICE IN THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY AFTER YOU FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH BATTERY FUNDAMENTALS AND THE PROPER RULES BEFORE USE. STEP BEFORE SERVICE Put the battery into service after taking the steps per the following procedure, since the battery is fitted with acid and intial-charged before leaving the plant. Further, keep the battery room including a temporary storage place will ventilated and keep sparks and open flames away from the battery, since the battery develops hydrogen gas causing ignition from sparks or flames. 1. UNPACKING AND CHECKING 1) After checking to see if nothing is wrong with the packing material after the shipment reaches you, unpack the packing material with care. Further, make sure of unpacking around the battery installation site transferring the battery with the battery container base wall. 2) After unpacking, make the following checks: a) Check the battery and its accessories for the quantity and visual appearance. b) As a result of checking the acid level, when it markedly drops rather than the lower level line, check to see if the battery is free from any liquid leakage and damage of the container, cover.etc. If no problem is taken, refill the battery with fresh dilute acid with the same acid gravity as its own to the lower level line. DAILY ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND RECONDITIONING BATTERY MAINTENANCE TIPS 1. Terminate discharging before the battery is over discharged. 2. Charge the battery properly not so as to cause overdischarging. 3. Alwayskeep the battery temperature within 45°C ( 113°F ). 4. Periodically, add pure water to the battery and keep the electrolyte at the proper level. 5.Batteries generate explosive gases. Always keep sparks, flames, lighted cigarettes away. 6. Be sure of keeping the battery outside dry and clean. 1. DISCHARGE The below table shows the end-of-discharge voltage. Care must be taken not so as to cause the voltage drop resulting in the terminal voltage reading or less as shown in the table : TABLE - Relationship between Discharge Current and End-of-Discharge Voltage Discharge Current (A) Ave. End-of-Dischg. Voltage per Cell_( V ) Dischg. Cur. at 0.1C¥or Less, or 1.90 Intermittent Dischg. Cur. : Dischg. Cur. at 0.1¢" or Less 1.80 Dischg. Cur. at 0.16C” or Less 1.75 Dischg. Cur. at 0.6C” or More 1.50 * Note: » C” represents the 10 hour rate capacity, + If the battery is put to use for the engine starting, it may have 1.20 V of the average end-of-discharge voltage per cell. 2. CHARGE It is most important to properly charge the battery in order to keep it in good conditions the charging method here in must be followed as far as posible. 1) CHARGE PROCEDURE In charging, select two pilot cells per one assembled battery and preliminarily insert thermometers into them after removing their filler caps. The use of pilot cells is a convenient way to typically detect the entire state of the assembled battery through the acid gravity and temperature readings of the pilot cells. In this case, it is necessary that one of cells which may have fear causing the temperature rise in the center of the assembled battery is selected. Then, make sure that the cell is connected correctly to the charger-the positive terminal of the charger out put to the positive terminal of the cell; the negative terminal of the charger to the negative terminal of the cell.Carging begins. As it is in progress, there is not only a gradual rise in voltage, but also a gentle increase in acid gravity. The slow increase in voltage and acid gravity are followed by abrupt rises in voltage and acid gravity, when near the end of charge and gassing becomes free. When the charge is terminated, the consecutive readings of the voltage and acid gravity are taken to the utmost and show no increase. Judge the time of the charge termination by the following parameters: A, The battery is charged with a 120 - 125% amount of electricity, providing the previous discharge out putis clarified. B, The terminal voltage per cell and acid gravity each reach 2.5 V or more and 1.240 ( at 20°C = 68°F ) and which show no increase for one hour or more. 2) NORMAL CHARGE The normal charge means just ordinary battery charge except the initial charge. There are three systems of charging in general use: (1)constant current-constant voltage, (2)constant current and (3)quasi constant voltage. a) Constant Current - Constant Voltage Charge The battery is charged at a considerable high constant current, when it has a low terminal voltage during the first half stage of charge after it has a voltage in gassing. b) Constant Current Charge This charging method is to charge keeping the current output capability at a fixed value of the 10 hour rate current as shown in the Table of Contents. c) Quasi-Constant Voltage Charge Keep the DC supply voltage at 2.5 - 2.8 V or so per cell. In this method, a considerable high current flows during the early stage of charge and it is kept low automatically as charging is in progress. 3) FLOAT: CHARGE Make sure that the average 2.18 V per cell of the float charge voltage or DC supply voltage becomes standard. If the float charge voltage is long too low , there will be any marked dispersion among voltage readings resulting from undercharging. If it is too high, this results in not only shortening the battery life but also unusually increasing the frequency of water additions. 4) EQUALIZE CHARGE Equalize - charge the battery per the following method of the parameters below: 1, Once every 1-3 months, when the the battery is applied to the float charge method. 2, Once every month, when the battery is daily cycled to the charge and discharge. 3, The battery is discharged beyond its rated capacity or is not charged for a long period of time after discharging. a) Costant Current Equalize Charge The charge is to continue until three or more consecutive readings of the voltage and acid gravity taken at half-hour intervals as a result of charging at one half of the 10 hour rate current show no charge. b) Constant Voltage Equalize Charge Charge the battery for the corresponding time at any voltage as shown in the below Table: Ave. Chg. Voltage ( V ) Charging Time per Cell (Approx. Hr. ) 2.25 48 2.30 24 2.40 8 Note: In the costant voltage charge method, the acid gravity reading taken is kept low sometimes due to insufficient acid agitation depending on the selection of voltage. It is, however, not inconvenienced to put the battery intact into service. 5) CAUTION DURING CHARGE a) Both too much or too little charge input give any detrimental effect on the battery life. An over charge cycle preliminarily causes carbonization of separators due to battery temperature rise, positive grid corrosion, positive materal shedding, etc. resulting in accelerating quickly an internal short circuit. Also, an under charge cycle forms an unreducible lead sulfate in the negative surfaces resulting in capacity loss. Special care must be taken not so as to result in any undercharging. b) Avoid to charge at a high current, when near the end of charge. Charging at the high current causes not only to accelerate deterioration of separators and grid corrosion, but also positive plate, buckling, negative material contract and hardening resulting in significantly shortening the battery life. When the. acid temperature exceeds 45°C ( 113°F ) , wait for the battery temperature cooling off by cutting off the charge temporarily or keeping the current running into the battery low. 3, WATER ADDITIONS The proper acid level is the upper level line marked in the container wall, When the acid level drops, fill with pure water to the upper level line. Exercise care to keep any observed level above the lower level line. 4. CLEANING Always keep the battery and its neighbouring area dry and clean. Wipe the plastic container, cover, etc. witha water or warm water dump cloth. Further, when dust or dirt is still present on the cover or container by use of water, use organic solvents such as thinner, gasolin, benzene, etc. or cleansers. The use of organic solvents may cause cracks of the container. 5. CAUTION IN SERVICE a) The battery develops explosive gases. Keep, under any circumstances, spark-producing sources, open flames such as lighted cigarettes, etc. away from the battery. Not only that but also keep the battery room well ventilated. b) The battery electrolyte contains:sulfuric acid and can burn. In direct contact with eyes, skin or clothing, flush immediately with large amounts of water. Especially, if electrolyte is splashed into eyes, see a doctor. c) Care must be taken lest the acid temperature exceeds 45°C ( 113°F ) d) Make sure that the battery is put to use in a place unaffected by direct exprosure to the sunlight. e) Always rust preventives for lead-acid batteries to the screw and nut for tightening the battery connecting elements or connectors. Also, chek to see of they are correctly t rqued. Tighten them securely farthermore when needed. f) Fill out the from with the battery maintenance recording such as the voltage, acid gravity, acid temperature, amount of watering. Temperature Correction Correct any observed acid gravity reading to 20°C (68°F) per the following formula: Dog = Dy + 0.0007 ( t - 20 ) Where, Dog = acid gravity corrected to 20°C D, = acid gravity at t°C t = acid temperature (°C ) during acid gravity measurement, CAUTION DURING INTERMITTENT CHARGE The battery is put back into service, after it has been shut down for a given period of time. 1) After fully charging the battery and controlling the acid level to the upper level Tine, shut down the battery. 2) Once every months, charge the battery conforming to the equalize charge method. 3) Charge back the battery immediately after it is placed into service. CAUTION DURING BATTERY SHUTDOWN 1) After fully charging the battery, store batteries ( and electrolyte) in a cool, dark and dry place. 2) The battery gradually loses its capacity due to self-discharge. Once every months, therefore, charge the battery per the charge method. 3) If the battery is reused, fully charge it and control the observed acid level to the upper level line.
