IOT - Based Smart Basket

Introduction:
As the technology is developing and seeing new inventions in various fields
including Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and so on,
there is an increase in the expectations in the customer’s point of view. With
the fast moving lives, the customers absolutely have no time to stand in long
queues in order to get their work done. In our project, we are presenting a
smart shopping system using Raspberry Pi controller. In the traditional way,
when a customer enters the shopping mall, they will start collecting the
necessary items, drop them into the basket and wait in the queue to get their
items billed. This process takes more time if there are more customers at the
bill counter. To reduce this waiting time and to simplify the billing process we
have proposed an idea of using a smart basket instead of this traditional
approach. The baskets/trolleys which are used in the shopping malls are
protocoled so as to automatically bill the products put into them and the final
bill is sent to the phone number which is entered while taking the
basket/trolley.

In this system we use Raspberry Pi 4 camera, in such a way that it recognizes

the product by performing image processing methods, and the amount of the
product is added to basket. In this way the products are added to the basket,
adds the item value to the basket and the items removed from the basket will
deduct the item value from the basket. After the completion of the shopping
the user will press a button on the basket which generates the bill and displays
the total amount of generated bill on the LCD display attached to the basket.
The generated bill is sent to the user mobile with the help of GSM module
attached to Arduino Nano. After that the user pays the bill from their mobile
and shows the receipt at bill counter. Apart from that, the users who are
willing to pay by cash can pay the amount at the bill counter.

Existing System:
This kind of system and carts are already in implementation at foreign
countries. Many of the malls are migrating to this system.

 Richard Southern at California uses a Smart basket with Auto-pilot.

Proposed System:
The main objectives of this system are:

 Scanning the picture of Product.

 Retrieving the Details of products.
 Generating bill by summing up all the amounts.

Process:
 The customer will enter the mall with the Smart basket.
 He goes near to the rack where the required product is present.
 Then he takes the device used for scanning which is with the basket.
 Every rack consists of image of product.
 Using the scanner we scan the image of product and process the image.
 After that we will retrieve the details of product and push them into the
database.
 At last at bill counter we will retrieve the information in database and
generate the bill.

Hardware Used:
 Raspberry pi 4 2GB ram
 Raspberry Pi 4 Case Enclosure Official Red & White
 Raspberry pi official charger
 Raspberry Pi 8MP Camera Module V2
 Camera module CSI connector cable strip
 LED Screen
 Buzzer
 Micro SD card 16gb class 10
 Arduino Nano
 Sim 900a GSM module
 LM 2596 voltage regulator
 Jumper wires and soldering material and connectors
 Push buttons
 16x2 LCD display

Software Used:
 RASPBERRY PI BOARD WITH RASPBIAN OS
 OPEN CV
 IMAGE RECOGNITION AND PROCESSING
 ARDUINO IDE
 GSM TECHNOLOGY

Conclusion:
This project will not only revolutionize the shopping experience of the buyer
but also it will have a great impact on the shopkeepers too. They will get real
time data about the products being purchased and will know the stock of
products at each moment. This will improve the inventory management and
the customer’s relationship. Introduction of this type of smart basket will be
quiet appealing in the retail sector and will lead to a new era of buying and
selling of goods. Since the main issue is that it covers the saving time of the
buyer, and it can be considered as a good option for future retails. The billing
process is also simplified and the customer will enjoy this type of smart
shopping.
