The executives in the pharmaceutical industry
identify the integration of business and technology in
pharmaceuticals as one of their primary concerns.
Pharmaceutical companies have prospered
historically by discovering, developing,
manufacturing, and then marketing their products.
These companies are being challenged by changes
in many areas. The major areas of concern are R&D
technologies, regulatory emphasis, e-business and
supply chain management, marketing, consumer and
other stakeholder demands. In response to these
forces, pharmaceutical companies are merging with
other companies; outsourcing or divesting non-core
capabilities; extending product life spans; creating
strategic partnerships and alliances; investing in the
biotechnology sector; and focused R&D,
manufacturing, distribution, and marketing.
Information technology is core to these strategic
changes. This program answers the demand for
information technology education that is specific to
the pharmaceutical community and the software
vendors and consulting firms that serve the industry.
P ROGRAM AUDIENCE
The audience is IT professionals who are currently
employed in or have a desire to enter the
pharmaceutical and life sciences industry
(biotechnology, medical devices, or general
healthcare), and employees of software companies
and consulting firms that serve the
pharmaceutical industry. The course materials will
also be appropriate for non-IT professionals who
wish to gain an understanding of the role of IT in the
pharmaceutical industry.
P ROGRAM OFFERING
Courses for both alternatives are offered at Stevens
on weekday evenings and on Saturday mornings.
Also, Stevens will offer courses off-campus at
company sites if requested and there is sufficient
enrollment.
P ROGRAM S TRUC TURE
The Howe School offers a unique program for the IT professional
in the pharmaceutical industry. This program is available via three
alternatives. They are a Master of Science in Information Systems
with a concentration in the Pharmaceutical Industry
(MSIS/Pharma), a Graduate Certificate for the Pharmaceutical
Industry and an MBA in Technology Management with a
Pharmaceutical Industry major.
The MSIS/Pharma Master’s Degree has 12 courses, four are
pharmaceutical specific. The program covers business, information
systems, and pharmaceutical topics. The Graduate Certificate
consists of only the four pharmaceutical courses. The MBA is 20
courses with Information Technology and Management courses.
The pharmaceutical courses are identical in all alternatives. Credit
for the four pharmaceutical courses may be applied to all three
program alternatives.
