UME 733 INDUSTRIAL METALLURGY

B.E (Mechanical) – Third Year (Jul–Dec 2020)

Time: One Hour

TUTORIAL NUMBER – 01

1. Discuss the difference in the scope of ‘Extractive Metallurgy’ and ‘Industrial

Metallurgy’. What are the other names for these two fields? List the main steps under
‘Extractive’ metallurgy.

2. What is the purpose of using the ‘concentration/ore dressing’ step during extractive
metallurgy? Name a few processes which are popularly used under this step. What is
the common name given to the impurities removed from the metal’s mineral in this
step?

3. Physical metallurgy studies the mechanical properties of metallic systems and

investigates how these properties are affected by three main control
variables/processes. Explain the statement.

4. When a metallic system is being investigated at the microscopic level, one phase
differs from another phase in terms of one or more of the four main parameters. List
these parameters. Do alpha and delta iron represent the same phase? Explain.

5. With examples, explain the difference in the terms of ‘phases’ and ‘components’. On
the basis of volume fraction occupied by phases in the microstructure of a given
metallic system, what are the two main categories of phases? What are the various
forms in which components of a materials system can exist?

6. State examples of a few metallic systems which do not obey the general rule that
number of components present in a metallic system is equal to the number of
elements comprising it.
