HEART DISSECTION QUESTIONS

1. The ventral surface of the heart can be identified by the presence of the pulmonary vein
facing upwards and the apex which points to the left as you look at it.

2. There are four chambers found in the mammalian heart. The chambers are the right
atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium and the left ventricle.

3. The chambers that are referred to as the pumping chambers are the ventricles.

4. The chambers that are referred to as the receiving chambers are the atria.

5. When the atria reaches full capacity, the tricuspid valves open to allow blood to flow into
the ventricle. When the ventricle reaches full capacity, the tricuspid valve will close to
prevent backflow into the atria.

6. The tricuspid valve is formed of three cups, that is the anterior, septal and posterior.
Each of these cusps is anchored to the fibrous ring that surrounds the office of the right
atrium and the left ventricle, which this valve joins. The pulmonary valve is also formed
of three cusps, that is the anterior, left, and right cusp This valve separates the right
ventricle and the outflow tract of this ventricle.

7. The walls of the atria are thinner because these chambers do not pump blood at high
pressures out of the heart unlike ventricles which are thicker and are required to do so.

8. The purpose of the heart valves are to prevent the backflow of blood in the atria when the
ventricles have high levels of blood

9.
10. Vessels that carry blood away from the heart are called arteries, while veins carry blood
toward the heart.

11. The largest artery is the aorta because it connects directly to the heart and is the
beginning point for blood transport to the entire body.
