BS 476 : Part 5: 1979
British Standard
Fire tests on building materials and structures
Part 5, Method of test for ignitability
1. Scope
This Part of this British Standard specifies a method of test
for the determination of the ignitability characteristics of
‘the exposed surfacss of essentially fat, rigid or semi-rigid
building materials or composites, when tested in the vertical
position.
2. Reference
“The title of the standards publication referred to in this
standard is given on page 5.
3, Definitions
For the purposes of this British Standard, the definitions
given in BS 4422 apply, together with the following.
3.1. product. Tho material or composite about whict
information is required.
3.2 matorial. A basic single substance or uniformly
dispersed mixture,
3.3. composite. A combination of materials that are
‘generally recognized in building construction as discrete
entities.
3.4 exposed surface. That surface of the product
subjected to the heating conditions of the test,
4. Suitability of a product for testing
5.3 Conditioning of specimens. Before testing, the
specimens shall be conditioned to constarrt mass” st ¢
temperature of 23 + 2°C and a relative humidity of
50+ 10%,
6. Test apparatus
1 General. All dimensions are expressed as nominal
values unless tolerences are specified,
6.2 Test frame. A suitable tost apparatus is shown in
figure 1. The test apparatus shall consist of a U-trame of
9 mun steel rod or tube fixed to a rigid steel base. The frame
shall be provided with two claps fixed at mid-height to
hold the specimen centrally. Two supports of the same
section @s the freme shall be fitted verticelly to the base so
that the lower edge of the specimen rests on them in its
testing position.
6.3 Gas bummer, A metal tube with one end reduced to an
orifice of 1.50.1 mm diameter shall be pivoted on 3 fixed
strap attached to the base and it shall be provided with an
adjustable stop so that, when set In Its testing position, the
‘ube is inclined at an angle of 45 + 5° to the vertical and
‘the centre of its orifice is 3 +1, -O mm from the esntral
point of the face of the specimen {see figure 2}.
GA Timing device. The timing davies shall bs capsble of
measuring elapsed time to an accuracy af not worse than
