QUESTION

How much salt do I

need to put in water
to make an egg float?
MY FAMILY'S
HYPOTHESIS
HYPOTHESIS

The egg is denser than water,

so I think that it will take 2-3
cups of salt to make the egg
float.
• One egg

• Water

• Measuring Cup

• Large Container, such as a

large bowl or cooking pot

MATERIALS • Spoon

• Table Salt
INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 Pour water into the bowl until it is about half full

Step 2 Place an egg in the bowl to see if it sinks or floats

Step 3 Start by pouring in half a cup of salt, then stir until

it dissolves

Step 4 Repeat Step 3 until the egg floats

RESULTS
When we first dropped the egg into the bowl of water, it immediately sunk. Since the egg
is much more dense, it can not float in regualr tap water. After adding 2 cups of salt, the
egg began to float. The salt creates more density than the egg, which helps it to float. My
hypothesis was correct, as I guessed the egg would not float without 2-3 cups of salt.
