Daily Lesson Plan

Teacher: Bryttany Carson

Lesson Date: 2/28/2021
Subject: Science
LDC/ Unit Title: Piaget’s Model of Cognitive Development 5th Grade

CCSS/CLGs/SC Assessment Limits/Standards:

INTASC Standards for Licensing Beginning Teachers: Standard #1: The Teacher understands
how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary
individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and
designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experience.

Agenda: Students will learn and understand who Jean Piaget is and his famous theory on
Cognitive Development. Students are able to learn the different stages of Piagets theory on
Cognitive development and relate those stages to their own life. They will apply this knowledge
to what they already know to understand why it is important.

Lesson Objective:
- Examine the 4 different Stages of Cognitive Development
- Examine who Jean Piaget is
- Learn how humans develop the same and how they develop differently

Lesson Time: 65 mins

Get started/Drill/Do Now: 5 mins - When children first come into the classroom, have written
up on the board “What do you know about the stages of Human Development?” As a class, have
a group discussion on the physical, emotional and social developmental milestones of human
beings. Have them think of events from their own lives. On the whiteboard write a timeline, from
birth until 10. Write students’ answers on the timeline with the age and the event of significant
development. Responses may include, first steps, first words, first day of school, etc.
Engage/Motivation: 10 mins Briefly introduce Jean Piaget. Show slides from PowerPoint only
on Jean Piaget. He was a swiss philosopher and biologist. He created the 4 Stages of Cognitive
Development.
Explain to the children who need a refresh, Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes
involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension.

Stage 1: Sensorimotor Stage (Birth to age 2)

- children experience the world through movement, touch and senses
- extremely egocentric (can only see things from their point of view)

Stage 2: Preoperational Stage (2 to 7 years)

-learning to speak
-increase in imaginative play

Stage 3: Concrete Operational Stage (7 to 11 years)

-able to think logically
-understand basic concepts

Stage 4: Formal Operational Stage

-cognitive abilities reach their highest level
- have better problem solving skills

Whole Group Instruction: 5 mins - Have students have a group discussion on how they
develop differently from each other.

Group Practice/Small Group Instruction: 10 mins - Students will rotate around the room to
discuss how they relate to the different stages. They can also take information from the Textbook
“Becoming a Teacher” (Chapter 9)

Independent Practice: 10 mins - Have students go back to their seats and have them draw a
diagram of the stages, use their imagination

Evaluate Understanding/Assessment: 15 mins - Split the class into 4 groups. Assign one stage
to each group. The group will then take the information from the video, and what is in the
textbook and will find additional information that was not covered. Groups will then draw a
diagram on their poster board provided, to go along with that certain stage. Students will then
record the following:

1. Have students write at the top “Jean Piaget’s Four Stages of Cognitive Development”
2. Name of Stage
3. Age Range
4. Characteristics of the Stages
5. Picture that best describes that stage and age range
6. USE COLOR

Closing Activities/Summary: 15 mins - The Groups will then present to the class their group
drawings of the Stages. They will teach the class more information on the 4 stages of
development.

Enrichment/Extension/Re-Teaching/Accommodations:
Students will understand how and why they develop the way they do. Students will have a better
understanding for their own individuality and why/ how some humans develop at different rates.
