HabasitLINK Application Examples –
Bakery Industry

Many plants face increasing amounts of unscheduled downtime due to frequent repairs and maintenance,
resulting in increased product waste, lower productivity and ultimately, reduced profitability.

Cooling lines take up a significant proportion of the space available in buildings, and packaging lines often
exceed the current permitted noise thresholds in the workplace.

HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts increase the efficiency of production lines for oven-baked products.
The positive drive system eliminates the traditional problems of belt slipping and tracking that often lead
to belt damage and production stoppages.

The open surface assists cooling of various products while reducing the conveyor footprint and saving
valuable facility space. The remarkably quiet operation of HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts significantly
reduces the noise level that accompanies traditional plastic and steel chains.

The all-plastic design of HabasitLINK® products completely eliminates product contamination commonly
found with steel belts (blackening effect).

Habasit produces an extensive range of plastic modular belts for use in a wide variety of applications in
the bakery industry including: dough handling, proofing, cooling, freezing, pan and tray handling, as well
as packaging.
6
Fruit and Vegetable Industries

Hygiene, easy release of the product, and abrasion resistance are the basic requirements for processing
and packaging in the fruit and vegetable industries.

FDA-approved materials for direct food contact, and improved cleaning of belts and processing lines result
in longer shelf life for fresh products and superior quality of frozen products. Metal-detectable materials
reduce the risk of metal contamination, also improving food safety concerns.

Nub Top surfaces and Flush Grid open surfaces reduce the surface tension of products and guarantee
optimal release and drainage even in the most demanding applications
7
Seafood and Dairy Industries

Hygiene is a basic requirement in seafood and dairy industry production processes. Perfect cleanliness for
belts and lines means that the process can be easily reproduced and quality maintained. Proper hygiene
reduces the risk of product contamination, increases shelf life, and ensures the highest quality products.

The patented design of HabasitLINK® belts provides efficient sanitation of the most critical areas by reducing
debris accumulation and allowing cleaning and sanitizing agents to penetrate the rod and hinge areas.

HabasitLINK® modular belts are made of materials that are highly resistant to chemicals, non-porous, and
FDA-approved for direct food contact.

HabasitLINK® modular belts are available in a variety of styles from Flat Top to Flush Grid surfaces to
optimize drainage for different products. They are designed to meet a range of application needs including:
inclines and declines, straight lines, and radius conveying and packaging.
8
Meat Processing Industries

In the meat and poultry industries, hygiene is a critical factor in the production process. Better cleaning of
belts and processing lines promotes food safety, prolongs the shelf life of fresh products, and contributes
to the superior quality of frozen products.

HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts are designed to assist in cleaning operations. The patented design of
HabasitLINK® belts provides for efficient sanitation of the most critical areas by reducing debris accumulation
and allowing cleaning and sanitizing agents to penetrate the rod and hinge areas. The FDA-approved
materials provide high chemical resistance even against the most aggressive cleaning agents, and resist
cuts, abrasions and impact.

HabasitLINK® modular belts are available in a variety of styles and materials from Flat Top to Flush Grid
surfaces designed to meet the demanding applications found in all meat processing environments from
initial processing to ready-to-eat products.
9
Packaging, Container and Bottling Industries

HabasitLINK® offers a wide range of belt styles for use in the container, bottling and packaging industries.
Products are specially designed to effectively transport filled and unfilled containers and cases (glass,
aluminum, steel and PET) while reducing product/carton damage and unscheduled downtime.

From single line to mass handling applications, Habasit can provide styles and materials to convey a wide
range of products with consistently low friction, low noise, and the tightest transfer distances. The
ActivXchange (ATX) greatly reduces product damage at transfer points and eliminates the need to clear lines
during product changeovers.

Habasit also offers a complete line of split sprockets in various diameters that reduce the time involved to
replace sprockets during regular scheduled maintenance.
10
Material Handling and Automotive Industry

HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts are capable of dealing with a wide range of material handling applications
from packages to people. The high strength, extremely durable designs and materials resist abrasion,
impact and temperatures. The smooth-running low-friction design allows for stable platforms that are suitable
for plant personnel to cross with the highest levels of safety.

HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts are available in multiple styles including: high friction (TPE) inserts,
scoop flights, non-skid surfaces and perforated top surfaces. Belt styles are offered in materials to meet all
environmental conditions, offering: corrosion and chemical resistance, performance in extreme temperature
ranges, anti-static and electrical conductivity, flame retardant, and UV resistance.

All HabasitLINK® products are designed to increase productivity, safety and system life while reducing
maintenance and repair time during unscheduled downtime.
11
Corrugated Cardboard Industry

Habasit has put special focus on meeting the critical concerns of plant safety and product quality faced by
manufacturers in the corrugated sheet industry. As the market demands more specialized corrugated board
for use in fast-changing creative product marketing, reduction of sheet damage caused by conventional
transport systems and increased productivity have emerged as the key areas for improvement.

Habasit provides a new technical solution that improves the safety and performance of the entire production
process for corrugated cardboard. One of the strengths of the Habasit solution is that it allows frequent
changes in the stack layout and stack size without calling on additional operators to support unstable stacks.
HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts provide a smooth, even platform for efficient movement of stacks that
are up to five times higher than the width of the sheets. This compares favorably with rollers that allow
maximum stacking heights of three times the width.

Benefits:
• Increased safety for operators in the working area.
• Increased production efficiency of the corrugator with fewer stoppages due to stack instability,
especially with constant format changes.
• Staff normally employed to support the most unstable stacks can be deployed elsewhere.
• Elimination of product waste caused by the "elephant's foot" or "sheet walk" effect, and curving or
marking of sheets caused by interference from the roller.
• Reduced transport due to the stable shape of the stack.
• Reduction in maintenance operations.
12
Spiral Conveyors

Low tension spiral systems using HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts can solve multiple problems in a
variety of industries. Spiral systems are ideal for cooling, freezing and general storage of products in facilities
where space is a limiting factor. The small footprint of the spiral system when compared to straight line
conveying can actually increase product cycle time without reducing productivity or utilizing important plant
area.

HabasitLINK® plastic modular radius belts M2540, M2543, M3840 and M3843 are designed specifically for
low tension spiral applications.

HabasitLINK® plastic modular belts have many advantages over traditional steel belts: their lower weight
requires a lighter support structure and less power. The all-plastic construction eliminates the need for
lubricants due to the low coefficient of friction, and eliminates product contamination commonly found with
steel belts (black specks). The consistent surface structure reduces product marking on delicate products.
The FDA-approved materials are non-porous, chemical and corrosion resistant, and capable of operating in
a wide range of environmental conditions.

Spiral conveyor systems are highly specialized and require specialist knowledge of the applications
concerned. Habasit’s expert spiral team has extensive knowledge of how to successfully design,
install and maintain low tension spiral systems.

Sprockets

Sprockets – The HabasitLINK® drive system

All HabasitLINK® belts are positively driven by plastic sprockets either one piece (S) or split (Z).

Two approaches are used:

a) Double row of offset teeth allowing bi-directional drive.
b) Lug-type single row of teeth, also allowing bi-directional drive.

Flights and Sideguards

HabasitLINK® modular belts are available with
flights to convey products on inclined planes.
The flight modules are injection-molded one-
piece designs that, when assembled, become
an integral part of the belt.
Flight modules are available with ribs on one
side ("non-cling") for improved release of wet
or sticky food products and can also be cut to
non-standard heights.
