LEARNING PLAN IN SS1 –

INTRODUCTION TO UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS

I. OVERVIEW

We live in a society that has been described as part of a “global village”.

Though separated by geography, people are connected by modern technology that
had broken barriers of varied cultures and traditions. As individuals, we are
confronted with a challenge of self-determination based on our socio-cultural identity
which is on the verge of being lost, if not already lost, due to the powerful influences
of advancement in technology and dictates of trends created by the global village
humanity has brought. The topic engages the learner to discover the value of being
an individual living in the midst of varied cultures appreciating his/her own identity as
one belonging to a particular ethnicity of a specific social bracket, and citizens of a
particular nation that belongs to a single world with respect to the value of the
individuality, identity, cultural beliefs and traditions of others.

B. Analysis
1. How do you identify yourself as a Filipino? What makes you one?
2. Why do you think Filipinos differ from each other?
3. How do you think Filipino culture/s subsist or continue to exist in the passage of
time?

C. Abstraction
1. Culture, society and politics are concepts. They exist in the realm of ideas and
thoughts. As such, they cannot be seen or touched and yet they influence the way
we see and experience our individual and collective lives as social beings.

D. Generalization

The way we live our lives – or should we say, the way we are being steered to live our
lives – presupposes omnipotent forces shaping the very fabric of our existence. The categories
that we possess as individuals – labels that are ascribed or given to us individually and
collectively – are a testament to the operation of these forces which leave us unsuspecting of
their intrusive and punitive implications in our lives. Our categories as male/female, rich/poor, or
tall/short, and even the problematic effect of the color of our skin are evidences of the operation
of these social forces.

E. Application

All the social issues that confront our society, including the causes and solutions
can be perceived through a thorough understanding of the concept related to culture,
society and politics.

F. Valuing

1. What will be the state of our country if people have relied simply on the wisdom of the
past and the teachings of religion?
2. If we have not developed the social sciences, will there be elections? What kind of
government do we have: monarchy or democracy?
3. How do we view and define the nature of society, politics and culture?
