NATHANIEL

Visual Treatment for release of the debut single

“Over & Out”
SYNOPSIS
Nathaniel is a former band member, releasing his debut solo single “Over & Out”. This song takes him
away from his traditional rock and roll background & draws him into a more subdued indie-rock genre.
The visuals will reflect the tone of the new single, as well as the inspiration he takes from other similar
artists; Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, James Bay etc.

The overall visual production will portray an intimate, almost 1:1, connection between Nathaniel and
his audience. This will be captured across both moving and fixed images to accompany the release of
his single and set a consistent style across his social media pages.

The final outcome will create a unique visual identity that fits with the new solo image of the Nath-
aniel and takes him away from his previous background. The cover image for the single balances ele-
ments of the composition.
VISUAL IDENTITY
Nathaniel’s guitars are a key part of his persona, so a strong emphasis and focus will be
placed on his guitars. He will often be seen surrounded by his guitars, almost caressing
them as they are such an important part of his identity as an artist. This also reflects
his rock star background and shows his longevity & experience in music.

Nathaniel’s relaxed indie/rock music tone & strong audience connection will be re-
flected by using warm lighting & muted colours; sometimes monochrome depiction for
future promotional material.

The key visual aspects of his identity will be maintained by sticking to using the same
colour scheme and font, this will keep his audience engaged and give a clean look to his
social media pages.

The Champion HTF Middleweight font used on the single cover will set the course for
other single covers to follow and be used throughout all material to keep uniformity.
COLOUR SCHEME
The colour palette of all visuals will comprise of dominant red/brown undertones, giv-
ing an antique leathered look. To stay consistent with the indie-rock genre of the single
& other music to follow, a sepia tone tint will be added to the image frames to achieve a
worn dusty look.
LIGHTING
To keep with the format of a home performance video, no lighting set up is required
as we will be working with what is available – a warm, low-level light projected from 3
points of the frame, and ISO values kept high to get some grain into the content.

This even ambient lighting will work by creating soft shadows & help to engage Nathan-
iel’s audience. Use of artificial, incandescent lighting will be used to achieve the desired
visual style. Shots will be taken at the end of the day for a cosy and natural feel, captur-
ing Nathaniel in the comfort of his home.
LOCATION, EQUIPMENT & CREW
The location will be Nathaniel’s interior at-home music room, a comfortable, furnished
space. Props will be kept to a minimum to keep the naturalistic at home look. A leath-
er chair, guitars, cushions & a patterned rug will be in place for the homely look to be
achieved.

Equipment needed will be 2 standard film cameras (Sony A7III or similar) with zoom
lenses and 2 free-standing tripods. These will each film from their fixed positions and
the shots will be edited together in post-production. A boom microphone will be used to
pick up sound of both vocals and guitar and will be visible in some of the wider shots.

Budget is limited, so the crew will be kept to a minimum, consisting of myself and the
artist. I will be responsible for setting up the area & filming all shots. No budget is need-
ed for location hire as it’s taking place within the artist’s home.
CAMERAS, MOTION & FRAMING
The video will primarily comprise of various mid shots from fixed camera positions, intermixed with
close ups of Nathaniel’s face & his guitar playing. A few wide shots will also be taken to help set the
scene. Within each frame, focus will be kept at eye level, looking at Nathaniel from the waist up so that
attention is drawn to him and his guitar.

Motion will be minimal so that it feels more natural and the audience aren’t distracted. The only mo-
tion to occur will be part of the opening shot and during transitions to be added later in post-produc-
tion. Camera movement will mostly remain static throughout.

SHOT LIST
1. Beginning with a mid-shot of a fireplace lit up, text will be edited over this scene dur-
ing post-production. This will be a quick, roughly 5 second shot, before transitioning
straight into a wide shot showing both the fireplace & Nathaniel sat in the chair holding
his guitar.

2. As the first verse starts, a close up of Nathaniel’s guitar fret board will be taken. Rack
focus will be applied here to draw the eye to important detail of the guitar. The opening
chords of the song will begin as the end of the guitar board comes into focus.

3. Simple cut to mid-shot of Nathaniel singing during first verse, alternating between
mid-shots and close-ups of both face & guitar for this verse – B Roll footage needed

4. Close up of face for the start of the chorus, then back to alternating between mid-
shots and close-ups of face & guitar for duration of the chorus

5. Second verse kicks in – alternation between extreme/normal close ups and mid-
shots of face & guitar for entirety of 2nd verse

6. Medium close up of guitar for middle eight

7. Back to a wide angle to end the video clip, & focus adjusted to blur out the image
EDITING/POST-PRODUCTION
The video will be edited to have an overall slight grain effect, as if it has been recorded
on an old camera. Red/brown colour tints will be added to it for a leathered texture.
Visual format will be a naturalistic home video, so a square aspect ratio will be kept to
here. No VFX applied to keep as natural as possible and avoid drawing attention away
from the performance detail.

Simple 5 sec intro – artist name & single title come up on the screen to introduce the
video, fade out after 5 secs and main performance video begins. RGB splits will be ap-
plied to make the video look like it was taken on a film, and to keep it consistent with
the colour tones used in the images.

Transitions between shots will be basic clean cuts, except for between the opening
shot & 2nd shot, whereby a fade transition will be applied. Reference videos below
