1. What are the aircraft electrical power sources? Cite their uses.

The aircraft electrical power sources include the following; First is the

Aircraft Battery are used for many functions such as ground power, emergency

power etc. A battery is a device containing one or more cells that convert chemical

energy directly into electrical energy. Second is Engine Driven AC generators

where the power produced by these generators is used in normal flight to supply

the entire aircraft with power. Third is Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) or the APU

generator the APU generator is not interchangeable with the IDGs (Integrated

Drive Generators). It is driven at a constant speed by the APU and can be

connected to the electrical network in flight in case of any generator failure. And

last is the External Power where it may only be used with the aircraft on the ground.

This system utilizes a Ground Power Unit (GPU) to provide AC power through an

external plug on the nose of the aircraft GPUs may be either portable or stationary

units.

2. What are the types of batteries? Cite their differences.

There are two types of batteries, these are Lead-Acid Batteries where it is

subdivided into two which are the Dry Charged Cell Lead Acid Batteries and Valve-

Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries (VRLA). The lead-acid battery is economical and

has extensive application but is heavier than an equivalent performance battery of

another type. The battery is capable of a high rate of discharge and low-

temperature performance. The last is the Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) Batteries,

consists of a metallic box, usually stainless steel, plastic-coated steel, painted

steel, or titanium containing a number of individual cells.

3. What are the functions of aircraft electrical system?

An aircraft electrical system is a self-contained network of components that

generate, transmit, distribute, utilize and store electrical energy. An electrical

system is an integral and essential component of all but the most simplistic of

aircraft designs.

4. During emergency situation, what are the possible source of electricity? Defend

your answer.

All aircraft electrical systems have components with the ability to generate

electricity. Depending upon the aircraft, generators or alternators are used to

produce electricity. These are usually engine driven but may also be powered by

an APU, a hydraulic motor or a Ram Air Turbine (RAT). The generator output is

also used to charge the aircraft battery(s). Batteries are usually either of the lead-

acid or NICAD types but lithium batteries are becoming more and more common.

They are used for both aircraft startup and as an emergency source of power in

the event of a generation or distribution system failure.
