TRIM, STABILITY AND STRESS

SEAM 2

Partial Loss of Intact Buoyancy Caused by Flooding

Week No. 17 – 18
QUESTIONS

1. Once your ship was damaged, what kind of stability you have?

Answer: Damage stability

2. Based on your understanding, what type of ship does a Car Carrier Ship
belongs to? Justify your answer.

Answer: Type B because theType A ships are those which are designed to carry only
liquid cargoes in bulk, and these are assigned less freeboard, for vessels of their
length, than ships of Type-B. They have high integrity of exposed deck, together with
excellent subdivision of cargo space.

3. For your own judgment, what action will you take first if your ship is
damaged and partially flooded? It is listing 12° to port and trimmed 2.5m
down by the head. Support your answer with an explanation.

Answer: Flood Control is important first step to control the flooding of the vessel so that
we can restrict or reduce stop the flow of water from entering the hull.

4. Damage control have three objectives as you’ve read a while ago. Which
part of the objectives does closing of watertight doors before proceeding in
heavy seas belongs to?

Answer: Prevention means to take all practical preliminary measures, such as

maintaining watertight integrity, providing reserve buoyancy and stability before damage
occurs.

5. Now this is an open question. I would like you to write down anything
you’ve learned in our subject. As well as your comments and suggestions.
Feel free to write it down below.

Answer: In this module week 17 and 18 I learned the difference of type A ship from
type B ships. And the actions needed in order to maintain the ship stable even your ship
experiencing partial loss of intact buoyancy and also actions need to be taken in case of
damage or flooding in the vessel. In module week 16 I learned about Angle of Loll, its
effects and how to correct it. In order for us to correct the angle of loll we need to lower
the center of gravity , moving weight downwards and adding water ballast in double
bottom tanks or removing weight above the ship vertical centre of gravity for us to
determine equilibrium of our ship or stable buoyancy.s
