MANAGEMENT 1 W3 PRE-TEST Instruction: Answer the following questions. 1.

What does
situational awareness include? Situational awareness includes possession of good perception of
surroundings at all times, the ability to comprehend what's happening around you, and predicting on
how it will affect your ship. 2. How do you use situational awareness? We use our situational
awareness to make decisions and instruct others. Situation awareness has been recognized as a
critical, yet often elusive, foundation for successful decision-making across a broad range of
situations, many of which involve the protection of human life and property, including aviation, air
traffic control, ship navigation, health care, emergency response, military command and control
operations, and offshore oil and nuclear power plant management. 3. Why is it important to have
situational awareness? Situational awareness is important to everyone for them to be aware of their
surroundings and the potential hazards they face especially at sea. It is important that each individual
is looking out for his or her own safety as well as looking out for their workmates to prevent potential
accidents that might happen.

MANAGEMENT 1 W3 ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY 1. What I know. Since I already read the first
page of this topic I have a basic overview of this lesson including the situational awareness
definition. 2. What I want to know. I'm interested in further learning on how to have a good
situational awareness on the maritime environment. And how this affects the proper execution of the
job order. 3. What I learned. Upon reading the module provided I learn about the importance of
situational awareness. Another thing is it was stated that situational awareness is a human perception
which most people mistakenly took this as a form of technology. Further discussed information are
about how to possess a proper situational awareness onboard.

MANAGEMENT 1 W4 L2 PRE-TEST 1. What does automation awareness mean? It means onboard

automation consists of applications that make vessel operations easier, safer and more efficient.
Whether it is for basic monitoring and control or comprehensive integrated platform management. 2.
What is the difference between automation awareness and situational awareness? So basically when
we say situational awareness it means a person's mental model of the world around him or her which
is a central to effective decision making and control in dynamic systems and situations while
automation awareness is a discussion about the different levels of characteristics, advantages and
dangers of automation itself. 3. Give samples of automation awareness in the ship you have known.
Applications Propulsion control Power management Camera surveillance Electronic incident
Automated decision Helideck support Remote access

MANAGEMENT 1 W4 L2 ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY 1. What is the different mode of

Automation? Below are the different mode of automation: APPLICATIONS: Alarm, Monitoring and
Control Monitoring and controlling the machinery Propulsion Control: Monitoring and controlling
the propulsion power availability Power Management: Ensuring electrical power availability Camera
Surveillance: Video surveillance and recording Electronic Incident: Board Maximizing internal
situational awareness Automated Decision: Support Decision support for the operator On-Board
Training / Land-Based Training: Advanced operator training Helideck Support: Safe helideck
operations Remote Access: Ship information available at shore 2. What is the danger of Automation?
While automation may decrease workload and effort for employees, it has been implicated as a
source of increasing boredom in some jobs. The risks of boredom are often highlighted in safety
critical environments, in which automated systems have increased tedium. 3. How can you manage
automation awareness? We can manage automation awareness by monitoring automated system
possible failures and the presence of conditions the system is not designed to handle using our own
situational awareness.

MANAGEMENT 1 W5 L3 PRE-TEST
1. What do you think of why most of the ship's faults came from human error? The extensive studies
looking into human errors and their implications have categorized few reasons that mostly lead to a
mistake somewhere, the top most reason being fatigue. The studies have revealed that in most cases,
it is an overworked, tired and somewhat disoriented crew that fails to make the right decision which
may be as small as pulling the correct lever. Another of the top reasons for human error is
insufficient communication. Where the crew fails to communicate effectively with each other, the
risks of maritime accidents increase manifold. Another important reason for human error that is
detrimental to the marine industry as a whole is insufficient knowledge. Other reasons include
improper hazard management training, faulty managerial decision, insufficient knowledge, lack of
maintenance of standards etc which result in a mistake being made somewhere.
2. What do you think is the solution in order to reduce human error on ships? In order to reduce
human error onboard the ships we should have a good situational awareness, good communication
and alertness is a must. Another is to check training and qualifications, avoid job distractions or be
focused at work, avoid drinking alcohol while working, complacency and teamwork.
3. To which extent does seafarers meet their complacency/satisfaction on board ship? Seafarers meet
their complacency or satisfaction on board ship when they become successful in a specific operation.
4. What will you do to alleviate boredom on a ship? I personally believe that in order to alleviate
boredom onboard is to have good food to feed yourself. When your body is full your mind can
function and think well. Another is to communicate with your co -workers by sharing each other's
ideas, thoughts, and experiences. Getting along with each other makes a job less difficult and boring.
And lastly, I strongly suggest to have your own hobby. Creativeness enhances someone's capability
thus enjoying it means you’re less bored.

W5 L 3 ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY Topic: Human Error, Complacency and Boredom 1. What I

know. Before reading this module I have already insights to the primary causes of ship accidents
which includes, lack of training and skills, lack of sleep, poor decision making, engine breakdowns
which are all related or linked to human error. 2. What I want to know. I want to learn how to contain
human error and what are the ways to lessen or reduce these accidents. 3. What I learned. After some
extensive reading of the module I learned about how to be responsible onboard while working and
what things we should do to reduce boredom strike at sea as well as communication as a factor.
